Kara Welsh was a national champion and two-time All-American for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team.
Welsh, 21, of Plainfield, Ill., was shot and killed late Friday night inside an apartment on W. Whitewater St. A 23-year-old man was arrested Saturday in connection with the case.
In remembering Welsh Sunday, UW-Whitewater Athletics called her "a true Warhawk."
"To put into words the impact Kara had on the Warhawk community is impossible," said Coach Jen Regan. "A powerful athlete, dedicated teammate, and the light in everyone’s dark days, Kara truly lifted each and every one of us up in her time as a Warhawk gymnast. There are no words to describe the void we all feel in our hearts, but Kara’s legacy will live on through Warhawk gymnastics forever."
According to the school, Welsh holds four of the top eight scores recorded by a Warhawk gymnast in program history on the apparatus.
Welsh earned a second-place finish in the WIAC Championship after tying for second on the vault. In her first National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Championship appearance, Welsh tied for third on the vault to earn All-America honors.
In 2023, Welsh won the vault title at the WIAC Championship meet and qualified for nationals as an individual. She went on to win the national title in the event with a score of 9.825.
In 2024, Welsh battled back from an illness to compete in the WIAC Championship meet – her first competition of the season. She stuck her vault, and tied the program record in the event, 9.875, and claimed the vault title for the second consecutive season. She went on to help the Warhawks to a runner-up finish in the NCGA Championship.
The school announced Sunday that flags on the UW-Whitewater campus will fly at half-staff on Tuesday, September 3 in Welsh’s memory.
A GoFundMe page has been established with contributions supporting the Welsh family.
"Kara was a true Warhawk – an amazing person, student and athlete," said Athletic Director Ryan Callahan. "We are all lucky to have spent time with her over the past three years. She was selfless and made everyone around her better. Our hearts go out to her mom, Nancy, and the rest of her family and friends."
No name? Well here are some possibilities:
Boyfriend or party gone sideways because somebody was disrespected?
Very sad for her family.
So who’s the 23-year-old? He’s an adult, so the news can name him.
Yes, but only if he's White.
Only info I could find is that he is also a UWW student.
Am I the only one that lives in a county with a jail roster online?
Don’t forget “Dayshawn’’.
The article I read is that they will release husband name when he’s charged on Tuesday and he’s being charged with first degree murder.
Makes you wonder if his folks are big wigs of some sort.
His, not husband. Autocorrect is drunk again.
Yes, drunk with power!
(Mine too has been a bit wonky lately.)
Most counties have one, but require you enter a name to search for an inmate/prisoner.
I can bring up the whole bunch with one click.
Decourus
La’shawn
D’wayne
Shantel
Whitewater has had a whole bunch of illegal filth dropped in by Biden.
That’s because you live in a racist county, don’t you know...
You could probably figure it out based on age and date of arrest.
But a liberal state like Wisconsin might have sanitized their rosters removing names and mugshots.
Now they only show age, height, weight and arrest details.
Making it totally useless.
The police said it’s an ongoing investigation. I can only surmise that they want to be sure they got him with all the charges and the degree they warrant and don’t want to blow the case.
Don’t be silly. Ain’t a negro in that jail. And we’re proud to arrest lots of women. I know a couple of the ones in there...homeless folks I’ve encountered in the woods.
