An estimated 462 million people around the world suffer from type 2 diabetes, a chronic disease in which the body has problems using sugar as a fuel, leading to a buildup of sugar in the blood and chronic health issues.
New research shows how zinc, pH levels and insulin work together to inhibit the buildup of protein clumps that contribute to this disease.
The research focuses on the intricate dance between insulin and the hormone amylin, or human islet amyloid polypeptide (hiAPP). Amylin is a naturally occurring peptide hormone that plays a role in regulating glycemia and energy balance. But human amylin can form amyloid fibers, which can destroy insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
"At the core of our research we want to understand the complex effects of insulin on amylin's aggregation and its resultant toxicity," said Ramamoorthy. "These are factors that are critical to understanding type 2 diabetes pathophysiology."
What sets this study apart is its innovative angle on enhancing insulin's protective capabilities against IAPP's harmful effects. As the research progresses, new treatments for the millions of people grappling with type 2 diabetes move closer.
"Amylin is produced in the pancreas alongside insulin and has a tendency to clump into aggregates called amyloid," said Sam McCalpin. "They're like the plaques that form in the brain with Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease."
Researchers are interested in developing drugs to break them up or stop them from forming. For individuals with type 2 diabetes, amylin tends to cluster into harmful amyloid plaques, devastating the islet cells responsible for hormone production. However, insulin emerges as a potential hero, showing capabilities to hinder amylin's aggregation.
This study unravels the nuances of their interaction, alongside the roles of zinc and pH levels, bringing scientists closer to decoding the cellular intricacies of diabetes.

“The primary protein component of these amyloid plaques is the human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP, also called amylin).”
“Within pancreatic β-cells, hIAPP is stored in secretory granules, alongside zinc, insulin, and the C-peptide, at concentrations orders of magnitude higher than what has been observed to spontaneously form toxic aggregates in vitro.”
“Acidic pH, zinc, and insulin have been individually established as inhibitors of hIAPP aggregation.”
So, you can’t really fix insulin or Ph much, but you can make sure you are getting an adequate, not excessive, amount of zinc a day.
The Upper Tolerable Limit for zinc is no more than 40 mg a day (some go beyond for health conditions). The US RDA is 11 mg for men and 8 mg for women. Have zinc and copper in a 7.5:1 ratio, according to multiple health sites, as they drive out the opposing mineral.
bump for reference
I take a 50mg caplet daily along with D/K-2. I am sure I am getting zinc from other sources. What is the acceptable blood level range please, anyone?
Bkmk
I have frequently taken 50mg Zinc for weeks at a time, especially when combining with Quercetin for immune support against Covid. In early 2023 when my Vitamin D level went into insufficient level I was sick for 3 months and after 2 months lost my sense of smell, even though I was taking that amount of Zinc. Undoubtedly the zinc was trying to fight my virus illness. I then started taking 150 mg. zinc and in 5 days my smelling was restored.
There is a difference between taking 50 mg. of a zinc compound like zinc oxide, zinc gluconate, zinc sulfide, etc. Taking any one of those compounds means you are taking far less than 50 mg. of elemental/pure zinc. So you need first to consider which kind of zinc your information source was talking about. I have been taking a zinc compound, not elemental zinc. In fact you have to find out exactly how much zinc is in each of these compounds, as it varies, to then determine how much of each kind to take for it to add up to something close to 50 mg. elemental zinc.
The zinc Upper Tolerable Limit is for the amount of actual zinc—not the compound’s weight.
However, most zinc chelates are actually listing their actual zinc amount as their dose, otherwise, no one would have any idea how much zinc they were buying and using.
Zinc is difficult to get an accurate number from, because it goes into cells quickly, as I understand.
I thought zinc was difficult for us to absorb. (?)
That's why HCQ was effective, it increased our ability to absorb it - and it was zinc that inhibited virus replication.
Thank you for that info.
LJ, do not know if anyone still asking about sense of smell loss or not, but, I came across this on Conservative Mind ping.

CM, thank you for all you do, it is appreciated.
Cells can turn off zinc absorption. Male prostate cells that are inflamed with BPH reduce their absorption about 20%. Prostate cancer cells reduce it approaching 80%.
Viruses in cells and cancer cells can play with the channels to protect themselves. When this happens, you benefit from a zinc ionophore.
I like your poem! Very sweet!
In 2022 I was dealing with three loved ones with cancer. Did a lot of on line research. Found one study that looked at zinc content of 9 common cancers. All 9 had cancer cells/tumors deficient in zinc, even when surrounding normal tissue was rich in zinc. On of that team of researchers even suggested the possibility of using an ionophore with zinc as a treatment and a research study of same. This was late spring 2020. They were calling zinc a miracle drug, by September when they were doing some follow up, they had lost their enthusiasm for zinc. Had Fauci and company told them to shut up?
Another study I read said that Astaxanthin, which I have been taking for my cataracts caused cancer cells to die more quickly of old age (apoptosis), while encouraging normal cells to live longer. Was this slowing the rate of loss of those ends on genes (telemeres?) which causes old age?
Needless to say I immediately had my cancer sufferers on all 3 items—quercetin, zinc, and astaxanthin, in additon to their usual supplements.
