When Evil takes over (Is rural living safer?)
It got a lot of comments, and I am very appreciative of that as it generated a lot of conversation. It also struck a cord with me.
As many of you know I am retired, forcibly so because of Covid/Long Covid. I have been searching for someplace to retire to, locally, with not much success. Housing prices are through the roof whether you're buying or renting, and of course everything else suffers from cost increases across the board.
But the reason for this post is find out from my fellow Freepers if anyone has suggestions for communities that offer a more rural setting for folks like myself. Heck, I'd even be willing to look at a tiny home community. I see a lot of posts from folks who describe rural locations but searching online for those kinds of places is almost impossible because Google algorithms always point folks in the wrong direction.
I really didn't know where else to make this kind of request as I really don't know of any good websites to look at. I'm hoping that ya'all can offer suggestions, and hopefully many of us who are looking to (kind of) escape the rat race can possibly find what we're looking for.

Yes! Both are excellent books! I was about to suggest Blue Highways, myself.
The Blue Highway book is now near 50 years old! You may be interested in the “sequel” Blue Highways Revisited:
“... Three decades later, Edgar Ailor III and his son, Edgar IV, retraced and photographed Heat-Moon’s route, culminating in Blue Highways Revisited, released for publication on the thirtieth anniversary of Blue Highways..”.

You can’t prepare for every eventuality so it’s best to have some faith in God and rely on His protection and guidance. That being said, any rural property that is within 50 to 100 miles from a big city is probably not going to be all that safe when SHTF. Two or three hundred miles from a big city would be a lot safer, but also makes day to day living more difficult. A small, friendly town where people know and trust each other might be a better option. If it’s a farming community, you might also be able to buy or trade for food directly from the source. If you’re way, way out in the boonies, a communal situation where you have enough people to have 24/7 security patrols would be ideal.
I moved from the suburbs of Orange County, CA to Cannon County, TN about 4 years ago. Rural, I got 50 acres with a hayfield, orchard and creek, a main house and a guest house. I have AKC dog sport events on my property. My town has a population of 200.
Cannon County is in middle TN. The people are nice, everyone helps each other (as an example, when its time to plant gardens there is a guy who will till your area at no cost). Lots of churches, a Christmas event, and other fun community events for all ages.
The young people, all respectful and home schooled. They do not sit and stare at their cell phones.
The nearest “big” store is 25 min away, but there is a Piggly Wiggly 10 min away.
Good veterinary services, great farmers market, buy your meat from a local farmer. I feel like I stepped back in time.
Just some ideas, TN has some pretty low COL rural areas with fairly close healthcare and services.
I specifically look for places that have small town(s) outside of a bigger town ( not a city city).
There are a lot of areas you can drive a few miles out of town and you are in the country (more or less).
Most states have 2 or 3 cities with the rest being smaller towns and rural.
I feel a little safer south of va. Anywhere close to the Appalachian Blue ridge mountains.
Milder winters then north,too.
Travels with Charley is a interesting book cause Steinbeck is talking about camper travel when it was barely a thing.
Assuming you’d prefer to live well away from most of the east coast/west coast cities, I estimated 150 miles and drew circles around the major cities. Places like Chicago, St. Louis, etc. I’d want to have even more distance.

I gotta admit, though, lately my faith has taken a hit with the VA and SSA not approving disability claims. I've been at it for over a year now and I keep getting denials. I'm about ready to do as one poster suggested, and that is to just get in the car and drive, see where it leads me.

I’m almost to the point of doing just that, hoping in the car and just driving to put eyes on places away from here. Nebraska, as well as Kansas, have caught my eye as possible locations to explore.
It is. Family members slowly are migrating this way and we all seem to be coming together again in our old age.

Grew up on the family farm in Bracken County, Ky. We just sold the farm 2 years ago, 180 acres. The price we got was astronomical. Wife and I wanted to buy the farm but the prices were out of control. Other family members were involved so highest price was going to buy it and we couldn’t compete. Brooksville is a nice little town, spent a lot of time there, still have relatives there and my cousins own the local funeral homes. We were in Berlin off Rt 10.
