Fish oil supplements are a multi-billion dollar industry in the U.S. and abroad, with about 2 out of every 25 people popping the popular omega-3 pills.
And a new study might encourage a new population to start looking into the supplements as well: people with a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol.
Using genetic data from more than 441,000 participants, the researchers calculated a score to predict the genetic likelihood of high levels of total cholesterol, high LDL cholesterol (which is often referred to as "bad" cholesterol), triglycerides and HDL cholesterol (or "good" cholesterol).
"Recent advances in genetic studies have allowed us to predict someone's genetic risk of high cholesterol," said Yitang Sun. "But the current prediction has room for improvement."
The researchers found that participants who reported taking fish oil supplements have lower blood lipid levels than predicted, especially for total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.
"Our study shows that considering lifestyles will improve genetic prediction," said Kaixiong Ye. "Our findings also support that fish oil supplements may counteract the genetic predisposition to high cholesterol."
It's no secret that high cholesterol is bad for the body. Arteries start to harden, and the risk of heart attack or stroke increases.
While a healthy diet and exercise can help prevent it, the CDC estimates that about 1 in 4—have high cholesterol.
Millions more are at risk of developing high cholesterol due to a variety of factors including one they can't control: genetics.
For people whose families have a history of high cholesterol, the study's findings offer another possibility to help safeguard their health.
"Taking fish oil is associated with a shift toward a healthy lipid profile," Ye said.
The researchers also analyzed the effects of fish oil on HDL cholesterol and found the supplements are beneficial in raising the so-called "good" cholesterol.

They are consistently too large for me to swallow.
I am one of those. I’m only 40ish, but I’ve had issues with high LDL, low HDL, and high triglycerides when I was in my 20s. I was a fit-to-fight Soldier in my 20s, but the blood tests didn’t lie.
I started supplementing with fish oil and my LDL and triglycerides have been within normal limits since. Genetics can sneak up on you even if you’re fit and healthy otherwise.
Eat sardines. Re
Yet a decade ago, my doctor told me I had high cholesterol.
So he put me on statins, and now my cholesterol is fine.
I suppose it's possible that my cholesterol would have been even higher but for the supplements and fish.
yup
Fish oil: For those like me who can’t handle large pills, I suggest lemon-flavored cod liver oil.
High cholesterol: The sweet spot for all cause mortality is about 190-260, NOT “under 200! Mine this year was 205, which is a bit on the low side if anything. Triglycerides were 75 and HDL was 55.
The only change from 10 years earlier was my total went up from 190 to 205 because my HDL had gone up from 40 to 55.
And there is little evidence that total cholesterol is even correlated with anything except for young men.
I take Black Seed Oil with the krill oil. Research suggests black seed has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It was conjectured its antiviral properties may reduce the risk of contracting COVID. Black Seed Oil is an herbal ingredient derived from Nigella sativa, native to Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Preliminary evidence supports a few medicinal properties, primarily due to the seed’s high content of antioxidants and other bioactive compounds.
Good comments. I have the same numbers and also take lemon flavored fish oil. Was thinking of going back on statins. Rather not. Your comments help. Thanks.
I recently found some smaller ones. I think they are Walgreens brand. Thanks!
I’ve thrown out at least 3 bottles over the years due to choking hazard.

“It was conjectured its antiviral properties may reduce the risk of contracting COVID.”
How did that work out?
I take 3-6-9 balanced Omega and have for probably 20 years.
Krill oil has worked better for me vs. regular fish oil. of course it is also more expensive...
krill oil pills are much smaller. That was one thing I liked better about making that switch.
Yeah, really. Sardines, herring, mackerel.
Got ‘em all, canned, go great for a quick lunch.
“How did that work out?”
It worked out SO good that I caught it July 2023 and April 2024. I woke up with a sore throat this morning and still have it now at 8:40 pm. I’ve been gargling with Betadine all day (povidone iodine) and using povidone iodine nasal spray, too.
I sure hope I don’t get #3.
Yeah, I hope you get over this run of bad luck with your health.
