For people who are believed to have a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol, fish oil may help bring that down.

They are consistently too large for me to swallow.

I am one of those. I’m only 40ish, but I’ve had issues with high LDL, low HDL, and high triglycerides when I was in my 20s. I was a fit-to-fight Soldier in my 20s, but the blood tests didn’t lie.

I started supplementing with fish oil and my LDL and triglycerides have been within normal limits since. Genetics can sneak up on you even if you’re fit and healthy otherwise.

I've been taking Omega-3 supplements, and eating fish several times a week, since the 1990s.

Yet a decade ago, my doctor told me I had high cholesterol.

So he put me on statins, and now my cholesterol is fine.

I suppose it's possible that my cholesterol would have been even higher but for the supplements and fish.

Fish oil: For those like me who can’t handle large pills, I suggest lemon-flavored cod liver oil.

High cholesterol: The sweet spot for all cause mortality is about 190-260, NOT “under 200! Mine this year was 205, which is a bit on the low side if anything. Triglycerides were 75 and HDL was 55.

The only change from 10 years earlier was my total went up from 190 to 205 because my HDL had gone up from 40 to 55.

And there is little evidence that total cholesterol is even correlated with anything except for young men.
