Aug. 6 (UPI) -- A mystery alligator was found wandering on a road in North Carolina's Rowan County and was relocated to a zoo.

The Rowan County Sheriff's Office said on social media that a deputy traveling on Long Ferry Road about 5 a.m. Sunday spotted an alligator in the road and called the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission for assistance.

The alligator was captured safely and taken to a zoo in the eastern part of the state for safekeeping.

The sheriff's office said alligators are not normally found in Rowan County, which is located north of Charlotte in the western part of the state.

"At this time it is not known where the gator came from," the post said.

I saw a gator in the Chevron refinery in Pascagoula MS. He had come up to one of the processing units to get warm. The Chevron folks named him stumpy because he was missing a foot off of his tail. The Chevron folks left him alone and kept a wide berth. Once the weather warmed up, he would head back to the water.

As I’ve noted here before, in 1965 I was arrested in northern Indiana for “Gator-Napping” (newspapers gave us that name) a full-grown, 6’ 200lb. alligator named Alberta.

We borrowed her for a well-justified prank that didn’t work out, came up with a 2nd one that also didn’t work out, and let her go in a pond in the woods.

What we didn’t know was a creek went from that pond to the largest lake in Indiana and Alberta found her way to the lake. People living on the lake wanted law to find out who put her there and put them away for life.

We were facing misdemeanor’s with 6 years in jail and $6,000 in fines. Judge made us think we were getting the electric chair.

Then fined us $35 each. 2 of us involved.

My first taste of the mercy of God. A year later, He caught me. For forever......Amazing Grace.

What was the plan for the prank?

No one else had a better bad idea?

Hmmm...
Been about 40-years since I drove it, but driving I-10 from Houston to Tallahassee is about 715 miles...

As I remember it, there always seems to lots & lots of roadkill on that section (through LA, MS, and AL) of I-10...

Can actually believe that a gator could grow substantially on that trek

“Can actually believe that a gator could grow substantially on that trek”

My last line: At least that was what they said.

Like a fisherman’s tale. Each time it is told the fish is bigger.

It started with a photo with slightly exaggerated perspective in Texas. Then someone posted it as in Louisiana then MS then FL.

Someone showed the “capture” in NW Florida thinking it was real. I asked him what were Texas Game agents doing in Florida. I then researched and saw that the same gator had been captured by the same Texas agents in TX, LA, MS and AL with sequential increases in length.

Plan? When do drunks have a plan?

I wasn’t drunk but my prankster buddy was. I drank but hated getting drunk - twice was enough.

Long story on the prank. Actually it was partially deserved and earned, but way too involved to go into here.

9 mos. preg. wifey chased a crowd of people out of her house that her drunk husband had invited over to party after midnight - with a shotgun! My friend decided the shotgun was unwarranted and she needed to be pranked. With a full-grown alligator.

But then, how is a woman to get a crowd out of her house politely after midnight?

Sounds reasonable.

She would have just shot the gator, but not on the kitchen floor she just mopped.

She met us at the door about 1am, screamed and ran.

Her brother returned with a pistol, and for a second time in one hour we were chased away with a weapon.

This time his action was surely reasonable. We were armed too. With a live, full-grown alligator.

Did you know alligators hiss loudly when upset? :-)
