Aug. 2 (UPI) -- A giant vegetable enthusiast from Iowa broke a world record when he harvested an eggplant weighing in at a staggering 8.33 pounds.
Dave Bennett from Davis County had his eggplant examined by Inspector Ivan Hankins of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship's Iowa Weights and Measures Bureau.
Hankins confirmed the 8.33-pound eggplant is the largest in the world.
"I've been growing eggplants for probably five years now," Bennett told Radio Iowa. "Two years ago I set the state record at 5.6 pounds."
He said Guinness World Records has been in contact to tell him his application for the record was approved. The previous record of 7.21 pounds was grown in England in 2022.
"Eventually I will have a plaque that says I grew the world's largest eggplant," Bennett said.
Grilled eggplant is delicious! Slice, hit with cooking spray, grill, then coat with a mix of olive oil, garlic and salt.
Like okra; I’ll pass.
To get to the other side of the road?
Well, for the record, I get it. But for the beer, I couldn't drink enough to want to eat eggplant.
If you look at the bottom where it says "Context" you will see 6 references. I would suggest you look at each link and see how much they vary. The AI that Brave uses created false results.
Here is the USDA list.
Eggplant, raw - 1 small eggplant
The only reason eggplant appears to have flavor is because what people have to slop on it to give it any. Cooked, it has the taste and consistency of phlegm.
If you want to know what eggplant really tastes like, it it raw.
Potassium 957.2mg - 20% RDA ....... this is good. People like me have to take potassium supplements because I’m chronically low in potassium for some reason. Even the docs couldn’t figure it out when I was in the hospital for my quad by-pass in 2020.
I’m sure he had fun doing it! I gave my Stock Guys a patch of land in the way-back of the Garden Center and they used it to grow MONSTER sized pumpkins that they had to move with a fork lift! The front of the store sure looked cool in the Fall and we always sold them all, too. (Retail 101: People will buy just about anything.)
Eggplant is the last thing I’d grow in a Prepper/Victory Garden. It’s a tasteless sponge, mostly water, with little nutritional value and no carbs for the energy we’ll need while we’re all starving to death under the next regime. ;)
Same goes for watermelon - any melon, really. They need SO much water and give so little in return.
But, to each his own. I’m having problems with vegetable stealing PUPPIES this season. They stole a Jalapeno yesterday and I hope it HURT when they bit into it and maybe they learned a little something? ;)
Sprinkle cayenne pepper all over the garden
That will keep ‘nosey’ dogs away.....................
Unfortunately for him, eggplant is sold by unit, not per pound.
I don’t want to actually HURT them - they’ll be grown and gone soon enough. And this batch is worth decent money. ;)
Peppers seem to be the thing they’re targeting for some reason. They’re big enough now to get up into the raised beds.
I should show you the landscaping around the house. Hostas? Shredded to the nub. Sedum? Almost shredded to the nub. Clematis? Pretty much uprooted, but still hanging in there. And I am missing many Solar Lights, the brats!
Hosta la vista!.........................
Is that a Free Range Eggplant?
Totally isolated from all the BS news going on around the world.
A local radio station did that in Mississippi when I was a kid in the 60’s....................
Why not"
It's stuff that goes on in rural America that you and I have become isolated against.....
I'm far from isolated against rural America. It wasn't a commentary on growing big veggies. It was directed at the eggplant aspect of it. Large pumpkins are cool. Large eggplants are, well, eggplants. Yuck.
Kentucky Ballistics will find a good use for it.
Babagonoush is delicious, especially if you make it over an open flame. So is fried eggplant and eggplant Parmesan.
