The organising committee of Paris 2024 has apologised to Catholics and other Christian groups who were outraged by a scene during the opening ceremony that evoked Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper painting with drag queens, a transgender model and a singer made up as the Greek god of wine.
The parody of the biblical scene, performed against the backdrop of the River Seine, was intended to interpret Dionysus and raise awareness “of the absurdity of violence between human beings”, organisers wrote on X.
The committee was forced to apologise after the performance caused outrage among Catholics, Christian groups and conservative politicians around the world.
“Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group. [The opening ceremony] tried to celebrate community tolerance,” the Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps told a press conference. “We believe this ambition was achieved. If people have taken any offence we are really sorry.”
France has a rich Catholic heritage but also has a long tradition of secularism and anti-clericalism. Blasphemy is legal and considered by many to be an essential pillar of freedom of speech. Supporters of the tableau praised its message of inclusivity and tolerance.

“Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group.”
Clearly this is funny, that now they pretend to be sorry. I will not ne watching any coverage whatsoever.
I don’t think it’s legal to mock ISlime, sadly.
That’s true.
Oh, boy.
The classic non-excuse.
If anyone was offended BS.
Here is my response: Know thyself...in the Biblical sense!
Exactly, the apology was just forced.
Indeed.
*** “Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group…”***
Clearly?? Clearly??
Oh my! This person doesn’t understand what the term “clearly” means.
What was VERY CLEAR was that there was intention to show disrespect to Christians.
This non-apology doesn’t sit well with me. I was offended on Friday, and I remain offended still.
Sorry they got caught.
Hope NBC takes a royal bath on the Olympics.
I won’t be watching
This ceremony reflected the reality that is modern France. Catholic churches and cathedrals are burning, its President Macro openly loathes Christianity and a large percentage of its population has embraced nep pagan hedonism and deadence. This celebration of homosexuality is consistent with French values and culture.
In re tolerance
Some things should not be tolerated.
“... Now do Moe Ham Head. Show the world how brave their secular little selves are...”
Yeah, the last Parisians that tried that were Charlie Hebdo.
There is a Story here that’s not being covered. In short-why are they apologozing NOW?
For DECADES, cultural norms have been degraded to elevate Wrong to Right.
Similarly, defenders of tradition have been howling about this degradation.
The response from Our Betters has been silence. Ghosting.
In moments where they slip, they gaslight us, thereby acknowledging our howls. Even in those instances, Their focus has been marginalization, followed by continued degradation.
There has NEVER been an apology - no matter how half-hearted - of this magnitude.
Why is Evil apologizing NOW?
The organizers are afraid it’s going to impact the bottom line, that’s all.
They lost a big sponsor. Maybe they are trying to get them back.
Two words:
“Bud Light”
They are afraid we may hit them in the pocketbook.
They want our money but they still hate us.
I’d bet fewer and fewer people are watching.
I don’t even know what channel they’re on.
They got caught.
The people in charge of the opening ceremonies are so ignorant and secularized it may have never crossed their minds their version of “The Last Supper” would be insulting to Christians.
There is worldly sorrow and repentance.
What is the difference, and which do you think this is?
The apology is not accepted from people who would produce such filth. When they’ve gone that far, they are not repentant.
