New evidence suggests a huge asteroid DID hit EARTH 12,800 years ago causing an ice age, wiping out dozens of species and decimating humans

A huge asteroid may have hit the Earth 12,800 years ago causing global climate change and extinction, according to new evidence found in South Africa.

Scientists analysed ancient soil at a site called Wonderkrater and found high levels of platinum - which they say supports the The Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis that a disintegrating meteor hit Earth and caused a mini ice age.

The resulting ice age is believed by many scientists to have wiped out dozens of mammals species including the Mammoth and giant wildebeest and decimated the human population.

Scientists believe 'platinum spikes' found in ancient soil samples across the world are evidence of the meteor fragments that crashed into Earth.

Meteorites are rich in platinum and the Wonderkrater site in the Limpopo Province, north of Pretoria in South Africa adds to almost 30 other platinum spikes found worldwide, mostly in the northern hemisphere.

Until now, proof that meteoroids had impacted during that period and potentially led to a mini-ice age had only been documented across the northern hemisphere.

A total of 28 areas with high levels of platinum had been found.

The findings from the researchers at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa partially support the theory that a meteorite crashed into earth with global consequences – along with another meteorite site discovered in Chile.

An episode of rapid cooling named the The Younger Dryas is a well documented period believed to have contributed to the extinction of many species of large animals around 12,800 years ago.

Theories previously pointed to this post-ice age cooling as a result of changes in oceanic circulation systems.

Another theory was presented by American scientists in 2007 – that the cooling was triggered by the dust fallout of an asteroid impact.

“Another theory was presented by American scientists in 2007 – that the cooling was triggered by the dust fallout of an asteroid impact.”

Why is this a different theory?

I read an article that had that very idea that the earth may be normalizing from the recent ice age.

Whoops... How about that. Exactly what “pseudo-archaeologists” Graham Hancock and Brien Foerster have been stating for years now... In fact almost to the very year this new discovery indicates.

I have a friend whose longtime professional research has been about the Younger Dryas. Fascinating stuff!

This conflicts a wee bit with the Laurentide ice sheet.

No it does not conflict, since the major impact site was the Laurentide ice sheet.

The “meteor” was actually many fragments of a comet - these fragments were up to a mile in diameter. Remnant effect are visible today in the Carolina Bays and the Nebraska Rainwater Basins which resulted from the giant ice shards from the impacts returning to the ground. When they hit, they shattered with ice shards slicing through tree, animals, and humans - this was how the Clovis People disappeared.

The constant bombardment caused firestorms across the North American continent, burning off 4% of Earth’s vegetation - the remains are a layer called Black Mat which is found in a roughly pear shaped zone centered on the Great Lakes region and stretching across the Atlantic, into South America and Northern Africa.

The fires cause a temperature drop, that ushered in the Younger Dryas Event which lasted a 1000 years. The other effect of the fires was a precipitous drop in Earth’s oxygen level, making it difficult to impossible for the Mega Fauna to breathe.

I think you might be assuming that during the ice age the total of the earth was frozen. This is not true, there was a zone belt of milder climate around the earth closer to the equator where species survived.

This was true through all the more recent glacial cycles the last couple million years. This event affected and changed that milder zone rather than the earth as a whole which was unusual for the normal cycle and affected species when a normal cycle would not have.

This event basically “included” those milder zones when it normally would not have naturally.

Fragments that hit are suspected to be parts of the Comet Enike which was originally thought to be 100 miles in diameter. Now we still pass through this area of fragments which can be seen in the Fall - the Taurid meteor shower.

The are like still mile wide fragments remaining. Eventually the Earth will pass through that part again.

Will they be see in time to do anything about it? Questionable, as there are many known rocks of varying origins that are black and very hard to see or track. There is one such fair-sized rock that is giving astronomers fits right now, as it is so elusive.

As did Neanderthals, probably for much the same reason...

Well the Sasquatch and the Neanderthals were cousins after all...

The last Ice Age was ending, ie melting, when the comet fragments hit - the resulting firestorms triggered a prolonged cooling period known as the Younger Dryas Event which itself last 1000 years before the Ice Sheets began to melt in earnest, giving raise to a new sea level 400 feet above that during the Ice Age.

Which also supports their assertions that the ancient megalithic cities are older than the Younger Dryas. The Younger Dryas is when man was sent back into a stone age survival situation from once advanced civilizations.
