How the Trump Rally Gunman Had an Edge Over the Countersnipers

The would-be assassin who opened fire at Donald J. Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pa., on July 13 was able to get a clear shot at the former president, as countersniper teams nearby failed to see him in time to thwart the shooting.

The New York Times used drone photography to build a 3-D model and recreate the lines of sight for both the gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, and three teams of countersnipers — two federal and one local. The analysis shows that Mr. Crooks, 20, who appears to have flown a drone to survey the site the morning of the rally, exploited one of the few blind spots within a rifle’s range of Mr. Trump, raising questions about serious lapses in security planning for the event.

Kimberly A. Cheatle, the Secret Service director, resigned on Tuesday, a day after declining to answer lawmakers’ questions about sightlines and security breakdowns at a contentious hearing on Capitol Hill.

What Secret Service Countersnipers on the North Barn Saw

This is the line of sight that one of two Secret Service teams most likely had just minutes before Mr. Crooks opened fire.

The gunman was largely concealed by two trees and the slope of a warehouse building roof, which he used as his perch. The warehouse complex, owned by AGR International, was outside the Secret Service’s designated security perimeter, the agency later said.

Stationed on the northernmost barn behind Mr. Trump, one of the Secret Service teams had been facing the gunman’s direction for 30 minutes before violence erupted, according to videos posted on social media and verified by The Times. At one point, team members can be seen standing up and looking in the gunman’s direction with binoculars.

The Times captured its own drone footage three days after the shooting..

counter-sniper lines of sight should have been irrelevant: there should have been a team of counter-snipers on the AGR International building in the first place ... period ...

That lie is clearly false as millions watched and rewatched the video of SS agents stage right drawing a bead on Crooks for over two minutes.

That lie is clearly false as officials said the SS agents who had Crooks dead to rights didn’t fire first because they didn’t know if Crooks was a friendly or not.

Crooks didn’t exploit sight lines, the secret service deliberately were not doing their job. Even as people pointed to Crooks they ignored him. Till he took a legit kill shot. Then they could see him just fine.

It was no coincidence that all these failures lined up perfectly for this clown. One failure maybe but not multiple failures that worked out perfectly for the shooter. I don’t care how they try to spin it. This was an inside job.

The shooter’s drone adds fuel to the conspiracy angle.

All drones weighing more than 250 grams are required to have Remote ID. Remote ID displays the drone’s altitude, speed, and position. It also shows the exact location of the operator on the ground. Law Enforcement can even see the name of the operator.

Even DJI drones that weigh less than 250 grams have Remote ID, even if the operator does not realize it.

If the FBI knows a drone was flown over the site, then they also know exactly where the operator was standing - and who the operators was.

"...Mr. Crooks, 20, who appears to have flown a drone to survey the site the morning of the rally, exploited one of the few blind spots...."

This is, at best, highly speculative. Unless he left a journal (or range data card) no one knows about, IT CAN'T BE KNOWN whether he premeditatedly was exploiting a "blind spot," or whether it was pure dumb luck. Because ultimately, even a blind hog finds an acorn now and again.
