A Sumerian “sacred code” has been deciphered, revealing divinely inspired building instructions echoed in the Bible.
Experts have been puzzled since unearthing the 4,000-year-old statue of a leader called Gudea, which features an architectural plan, an inscription claiming he built a temple commanded to him in a dream, and a “ruler” of undeciphered measurements....
British Museum archaeologists have now cracked the “sacred code” of these mysterious measurements after finding a lost temple in Iraq...Dr Sebastien Rey, director of the British Museum’s project in Iraq, said: “It is like the precise measurement we see in the Bible in a much later period, those of the Arc, or the Temple of Solomon.”
He added: “This has taken 140 years to crack...

It is like Sodom and Gomorrah. People either believed the story to be true or saw it as a parable. It took centuries before people rediscovered the cities and even longer to understand what occurred there and why the area was never resettled. Scientific knowledge and technology has proven the Bible stories to be true. They can explain how nature took out the cities, the question is did God use nature to punish wickedness, or did $hit just happen. Was the destruction used to create the story of Lot as an allegory for how God punishes the wicked and saves the faithful. There is a lot (pun intended) to unpack in the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. Just like the flood, ancients would have known a great flood to be a fact in oral tradition. Was the great flood used to build the story of Noah?
I expect push back on this, but there are aspects of all biblical stories that requires faith to believe. Understanding what actually occurred and how it impacted civilization and the belief in one true God in no way diminishes our faith. But, it is important to look for the allegory in the stories. If taken literally the true meaning is lost to the reader. We can read, memorized and regurgitate a Bible story, but that does not mean we understand the true meaning of a biblical story.
True, but my comment was about the modern sumerians not mentioning the flood-
as for “modern sumerians not mentioning the flood” the fact that they don’t doesn’t mean that the flood didn’t happen worldwide.
As the world was repopulated, societies didn’t necessarily carry the old knowledge forward, and societies did sometimes abandon God and not acknowledge the things God did.
You couldn’t possibly be more wrong.
The Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh dates back nearly 5,000 years and is thought to be perhaps the oldest written tale on the planet. In it, there is an account of the great sage Utnapishtim, who is warned of an imminent flood to be unleashed by wrathful gods. He builds a vast circular-shaped boat, reinforced with tar and pitch, that carries his relatives, grains and animals. After enduring days of storms, Utnapishtim, like Noah in Genesis, releases a bird in search of dry land.
There are accounts of the flood from almost every ancient civilization that has extant records. Clearly something happened.
Abraham’s father was a Sumerian from the Sumerian city-state of Ur. Reports I’ve read are that they were not a semetic people. But the Jews became a semetic people byo of intermarriage over time. Still, the Jewish calendar dates from the beginning of the Sumerian city-states roughly 4000 BC or 6000 years ago. Abraham came out of Sumer roughly 2000 BC at the time of the fall and collapse of the last of the Sumerian city-states to their northern neighbors.
My understanding is that the flood was also recorded by the Babylonians and the Assyrians. but their versions were not as detailed as the account in the bible. Therefor its thought that the bible held the older account
the ancient Sumerians, or Abraham’s father’s people, were not Semitic people. Rather they were something like the basques today. But its thought that at the time there were many island genetic people around the world. That world has since disappeared because of the many migrations and invasions in the last several millenia.
The jews became a semetic people by intermarriage. Their genetics don’t even even show any trace of a distinctly sumerian inheritance
there are no modern sumerians.
they disappeared as did their blood line.
The place where they dwelled in southern Iraq is now inhabited by marsh arabs. their genetics don’t display anything unique to that area either.
The Sumerian, Akkadian, and Old Babylonian accounts are all older.
The collators of the Pentateuch borrowed many stories from the greater civilizations that preceded them.
Some of it perhaps.
Prior to their captivity in Egypt, the Hebrews preserved things as an oral tradition. I've often called Genesis "the older testament" as there's a lot of things happening in it. It probably got written down during the 40 years' wandering, along with everything else in the Pentateuch, prior to the death of Moses. Deuteronomy was apparently lost when the Babylonians destroyed the Temple, as there's a probable reference to its recovery during the reconstruction.
Sidebar, the only wood likely to have been available for making the Ark of the Covenant was the coffin of Joseph.
hmmm sounds like they invented that story by hearing about the facts of the flood of Noah’s time which was 5000 years ago
the epic of gilgamesh was 4000 from everything i find on it-
no modern descendants of sumerians?
https://ancientspast.com/uncovering-the-history-of-the-sumerians-are-they-still-around/
Are they not descended from them?
sorry- forgot the post the paragraph of possible genetic link from the link i posted
“Astonishment and surprise pervade the thought of whether modern-day Iraqis can trace their ancestry to the ancient Sumerians. Investigating archaeological discoveries and genetic studies, a possible link between these two civilizations may be revealed.”
A Sumerian “sacred code” has been deciphered, revealing divinely inspired building instructions echoed in the Bible.
Not to be confused with the Sacred Cod.
But then again, the lines kind of get murky because in Hebrew, a cod is spelled the same as a code [קוד], but also the Hebrew-origin word for a cod is a bakala [בקלה] which also spells Kabbalah [קבלה].
I'll probably end up in hot water for mentioning any of this. 🤫
Didn’t bob434 invent the story that the Sumerians never mentioned a great flood?
Which is objectively completely untrue?
It’s right there in the earliest known great piece of human literature, the epic of Gilgamesh.
Bob434 also claimed that they invented this story from what they heard elsewhere, apparently based on psychic powers.
How does this work, you decide what you want to believe and then assume it is true? You have no idea what they saw and knew but you convince yourself you know how and why they wrote what they did?
I conclude that bob434’s methods of discerning truth are altogether broken
Wow- getting personal? I didn’t invent anything. Step up your discourse- no need to start in with personal insults because you disagree. Thanks
And no- you are wrong, it wasn’t me who first declared sumerians never mentioned the flood- go back abd read the thread carefully, I was responding to someone who made a statement that the flood wasn’t mentioned by the sumerians, and I responded that even if it wasn’t, that isn’t proof it didn’t happen.
Who’s powers of discerning are broken again? Lol good one fella
