The ‘Doomsday Glacier’ is rapidly melting. Scientists now have evidence for when it started and why

Scientists have looked back in time to reconstruct the past life of Antarctica’s “Doomsday Glacier” — nicknamed because its collapse could cause catastrophic sea level rise. They have discovered it started retreating rapidly in the 1940s, according to a new study that provides an alarming insight into future melting.

The Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica is the world’s widest and roughly the size of Florida. Scientists knew it had been losing ice at an accelerating rate since the 1970s, but because satellite data only goes back a few decades, they didn’t know exactly when significant melting began.

Now there is an answer to this question, according to a study published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

By analyzing marine sediment cores extracted from beneath the ocean floor, researchers found the glacier began to significantly retreat in the 1940s, likely kicked off by a very strong El Niño event — a natural climate fluctuation which tends to have a warming impact.

Since then, the glacier has been unable to recover, which may reflect the increasing impact of human-caused global warming, according to the report.

What happens to Thwaites will have global reverberations. The glacier already contributes 4% of sea level rise as it sheds billions of tons of ice a year into the ocean. Its complete collapse could raise sea levels by more than 2 feet.

Newsflash, CNN. In February, it is summer in Antarctica, and though it's not as warm there as elsewhere in the southern hemisphere, it is warmer, and ice melts when it's warm.

Even so, it's been "rapidly melting" since 1940, and it's still there!

“The glacier already contributes 4% of sea level rise...”

Which is what, a couple of inches? So the glacier melting has contributed 0.08 inches of ocean rise! WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!

Antarctica has been cooling and accumulating more ice so it’s not AGW.

I live 50 miles from Morraine, Ohio. Morraine’s glacier took 10 or 12 thousand years to melt back to northern Canada. But not to worry, that glacier will eventually be back like the other times before. It’s called changing weather.

Posted June 6, 2023

“We don’t have 12 years to save the climate. We have 14 months,” the now-defunct ThinkProgress predicted 43 months ago.

Former French prime minister Laurent Fabius warned 3,239 days ago that the international community had only “500 days to avoid climate chaos.”

Earlier, in 2009, Gordon Brown, the U.K.’s prime minister at the time, said we had “fewer than fifty days to save our planet from catastrophe.”

Also in 2009, former vice president Al Gore declared that “there is a 75% chance that the entire north polar ice cap, during some of the summer months, could be completely ice-free within the next five to seven years.”

In 2013, mid-melt, the Guardian ran the following headline: “US Navy predicts summer ice-free Arctic by 2016.”

The ice is still there.

“NASA Scientist: We’re Toast,” reads the headline of an Associated Press report from 2008.

In 2007, the IPCC predicted the Himalayan glaciers would disappear by 2035. The U.N.’s chief climate science body retracted the claim in 2010, explaining the prediction wasn’t based on any peer-reviewed data, but on a media interview with a scientist conducted in 1999.

In 2006, Gore claimed that unless world leaders took “drastic measures” to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, Earth would surpass the “point of no return” in ten years — a “true planetary emergency,” he called it.

The year 2016 came and went, and now we’re being told the early 2030s are the real point of no return.

The Guardian, citing a “secret report,” warned in 2004 that “major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a ‘Siberian’ climate by 2020.”

The year 2022 was the U.K.’s warmest since they started keeping records in 1884. The heat was, of course, blamed on climate change.

“U.N. Predicts Disaster If Global Warming Not Checked,” the AP reported in 1989.

The report’s opening line reads, “senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000.”

***They have discovered it started retreating rapidly in the 1940s,***

Well, MGM put out a Traveltalks short in 1942 about how the glaciers have been melting for the last 12,000 years and “if there is NO CLIMATIC CHANGE, they will be gone in a thousand years.”

So no matter what puny man does to stop it, it will continue to melt till natural forces throw us into another Ice Age which was supposed to be happening in the 1970s.

Fill up your glass with ice. Then top it up with tea. When the ice melts, it does not overflow the glass. It's simple physics.

They have discovered it started retreating rapidly in the 1940s,

Well, isn't that an inconvenient truth?

Me thinks glaciers have been retreating since the ice age and there isn’t anything we can do to stop it or why would we want to.

Is this glacier on Antartica itself or is it an ice shelf on the ocean? If the latter its melting would have minimal effect anymore than ice melting in a highball glass raises the water level. If it is land ice that crashes into the sea that would raise water levels.

Climate change is here have no doubt
Too much rain too much drought
Run in circles scream and shout

It’ll cook your brain and freeze your feet
Too much rain too much heat

Snow coming soon no relief in sight
Tornados and floods you better run for your life

Climate change is here better hide in fear.
They need more money or it gets severe

Hurricanes on the way they’re comin soon
You’re all going to die in the next typhoon

Too much rain too much drought
Run in circles scream and shout

There is probably an underwater volcano deep beneath it that has become mildly active. The ambient air temperature has not changed significantly to account for melting.
