Baggage handler issues warning to passengers who tie ribbons to their suitcases

Destined for delays.

Avid travelers tend to opt out of checked bags to avoid delayed baggage arrival, difficulty picking out their items or fear of their bag not reaching their destination.

But for those who have no choice, they’ll add a personal marker on the suitcase in anticipation of making their baggage pickup smoother.

However, this age-old luggage hack is delaying your bags from arriving on the baggage carousel.

Travelers have developed a habit of attaching a colorful ribbon, luggage tag or other accessories to make their suitcases stand apart from the hundreds of bags in the rotation.

Dublin Airport baggage handler John revealed that baggage attachments delay passengers’ suitcase arrival.

“Ribbons that people tie onto their suitcases to help identify them can cause issues with the bag being scanned in the baggage hall,” he told RSVP Live.

While this added accessory makes it easier to spot, it attracts negative attention from airport luggage scanners.

“If the bag can’t be scanned automatically, it can end up in manual processing, which could mean your bag doesn’t make it to the flight,” the bag handler explained.

Sending your suitcase off without identifiers, such as ribbons and old travel stickers, gives it a better chance of arriving easily.

“Take old stickers off the bag, it can cause confusion with the scanning process,” he suggested.

Another reason many people have their bags pulled is because they have marzipan, also known as almond candy dough, packed inside their suitcases.

“Don’t ever pack marzipan in your luggage. It has the same density as some explosives, so your bag will be removed and you’ll be called from the plane for a bag search,” the Dublin baggage expert said.

I only fly a couple times a year now on business. However, IF I can not fit it in a small backpack and normal carry on bag I do not bring it.

Even a week long trip when I get to my final hotel I will pay to have laundry done there. The expense it. No one at your final destination knows that you wore the same shirt/pants earlier in the week.
Fortunately, I never have to wear a suit.

My older brother was a bank auditor years ago. He would have to wear a suit to the bank daily. Which meant bringing five suits in a garment bag for a week long trip. American lost his bag once and he never got it back. They paid him but, it did not cover the cost of the bag and the five suits.

Interesting tidbit re: the density of marzipan mimicking that of explosives!

Just like Winona Ryder, a very highly paid Hollywood actress, was arrested for shoplifting several years ago.

It’s not the money, it’s the thrill...............

Good thing they let you go, though. I wonder what would have happened had you been wearing a MAGA hat though 😆

The only ongoing problem is really just seat size and legroom. Legislative help has been slow. Bet it would be different if they forced members of Congress to ride in the middle cheap seat.

I have an Xcelite screwdriver and nut driver kit I got from my Dad. It is probably from the 1950s. It is so much better than the quality of tools today. I also have his Snap-On tool chest and even some Blue Point sockets and wrenches. Plus a couple Snap On torque wrenches.

In 1996 my toolkit was being screened at Reagan National in DC, when the screener suddenly jumped up and yelled “It’s got wires in it!”.

Of course it was just test leads and BNC cables I use in my electronics work. All coiled up and neatly ty-wrapped.

But the had to have it inspected and cleared the area because it might be a bomb................

I think IF I ever fly again...I will wear whatever I need on the plane...I will look 20 lbs heavier, but I won’t have luggage.

On a side note the airlines charge a hefty checked baggage fee. They should offer something in return like free WiFi, extra frequent flier miles, etc… I used to check my luggage a lot in the past but it’s hard wear and tear on the luggage too which has also become very pricey.

Truer than you think. A relative works at an airport & had to point out to those checking the bags that a certain individual kept leaving with an empty bag & returning with a full one. They finally checked the ‘full’ bag & found contraband. But he got away with it multiple times.

Try a backpack or small soft shell cloth luggage bag carry-ons that could fit under the seat or won’t take up too much room in the overhead. It’s a bit easier to squeeze into tight places if necessary vs the hard shell types.

Put you stuff in a box and ship it couple days ahead UPS, so that all you need is a small hand carry.

So then I shouldn't pack that block of silly putty that was a gift for my nephew?

Good to know if you have the time and want to piss off a hundred people at once.

When getting back onto the plane, just say loudly, "It's ok, they just wanted to give me my gun back."
