I heard a story "on air" about a naked man seen running from a restaurant with a "battered sausage". It definitely had San Francisco vibes. Upon closer inspection, it was a British story. A "battered sausage" is a corn dog in the UK.

My dad was out on a business trip to Georgia. After the work day, he joined some of his customers at a local bar. Dad was fond of martinis. When he ordered one, the bartender asked "With or Without"? Not expecting that question, Dad asked "With or Without WHAT"? The bartender said "Grits". Apparently it's southern thing.

On a different trip to the UK, my dad had another naval officer in tow. His associate didn't drink alcohol. When the bartender asked for his order, he said "cocoa". The bartender replied in a Cockney flavored accent, "Cocoa!" "Cocoa!" "Not even the f**king queen drinks cocoa!".

But she had never heard of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

My favorite is peanut butter and honey. Put it in the microwave for about 30 seconds and stir to an even consistency. Serve on toast.

“Grits”???? Really?

Call it Polenta and they’ll love them. It’s the same food made exactly the same way

No self respecting Italian would use Instant Polenta.

Pickled herring is delicious if made right, but it is not “rotten fish”. The cartoon you posted is amusing but dishonest.

It didn't claim pickled herring was rotten fish.

It claimed fermented herring was rotten fish.

Now that’s just heresy. Grits are a cultural legacy, deserving of the highest honor. They MUST be served with butter, salt and pepper.

Putting sugar on them should be a capital offense. DON’T DO IT, ever.

Hate to admit it...but I like a bit of Vegemite...if one doesn’t think it is chocolate frosting before one eats it..but a salty extract of the yeast that is used to make beer...it’s not too bad...IMHO

Actually, if one checks the of ingredients in many food products . Yeast extract is one of them. Vegemite has the “umami” flavor...
Gotta admit, sausage gravy on grits sounds delicious

“I don’t think corn grows in most of Russia.”

They don’t. After the fall of the Iron Curtain (which is debatable - it still exists...), we exported many, many metric tons of corn to help them economically. It was meant to help feed the population, but they used it to keep their livestock alive! A Russian escort for our START team laughed at us for eating pig feed.

I’m well past retirement age and have never had a PB&J sandwich, which I know is considered by many to be unAmerican.

For those old enough to remember “Leon” on the old Andy Griffith Show, it was the messy, half-eaten sandwich he offered to everyone he met that grossed me out then, and does to this day.

On a UK thread, I saw an interesting comment. The poster said "marmite topped with shaving cream looks exactly like a glass of Guinness and has the advantage of tasting better". Clearly not a fan of Guinness.

Samuel Johnson in his Dictionary (1755) defines "Oats" as follows:

"A grain which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people."

I agree with all of these except root beer. Maybe the commercial product is overly engineered, but its origins with the root bark of the sassafras tree (sarsaparilla) are authentically American. You can find preserved root shavings or liquid concentrate in some speciality stores and make your own tea or cold drinks from it. Delicious, and not stinging and biting like the canned sugary soda drink.

Velveeta melted with a little milk and drizzled over seafood crepes is amazing.

A decidedly non-European approach to seafood. I was once schooled by a waiter in a restaurant in Italy after asking for parmesan cheese for a seafood dish.
