My residential electric service contract is up in about a month and just checked the markets for renewal. The rates have SKYROCKETED.
I don't know if this is because of EV usage increase or just the general crappy economy under Biden, but it's about to price me out of home ownership.
Anyone else seeing this?
[Service company is Oncor.]
good attic insulation is key. Another thing is to realize that late afternoon sun is actually hotter for your house than other times because the sunlight impinges directly on at least one whole side. So keeping drapes and shades down there is good as you say. Drawing in cooler air from shaded sides in the morning or late afternoon also brings down temps.
But the one thing that kills withstandability is humidity, and an AC does a good job of bringing that down. A dehumidifier also helps a lot. I use one (sometimes two) in my basement.
What might be done is to have hot water price cutoff switches.
The homeowner/electric company/state regulator would set the maximum price payable for hot water heating electricity. When the rate exceeds the set price, the switch would cut off the flow of electricity.
Watch out for those new fangled window a/c units — flammable refrigerant - R32
Oh wise and mighty soothsayer, one capable of free solar power.
Please tell me how they recover the price of those ridiculously expensive solar panels over, what I assume, is a 7 year depreciation schedule, which only work half the day at best?
Bet you a solar panel farm costs as much, if not more, then an equivalent kw coal or nat. Gas plant.
Power management is a dire need with ‘green’ electricity supply.
Last year I struggled to get my monthly bill under $100, right now, between heating and cooling season, I’m seeing $165 range and I have nothing much on.
Peco in Northeast PA:
2022——7.673 kWh with 0.728 Transmission charge
2024-— 9.425 kWh with 0.857 Transmission charge
Since Biden [2021], my auto insurance has increased from $340 semi-annual to $434 semi-annual on a now-6-year-old vehicle.
[I had to increase the deductibles or the most recent would have been $475 semi-annual.]
The EPA is forcing closure of virtually all cheap, reliable, and clean coal-fired electric generation. Rates will continue to skyrocket. This will not be a local thing.
I am amazed our coop maintains rates like they do but it has gone up three times since '21. Just this year the Power Cost Adjustment has doubled from 1.4 cents to 2.8 cents. IT WILL GO MUCH HIGHER.
EPA is mandating changes to emissions that are not possible with the technology of the day. The "mix" they are pushing is all renewable. They are doing this by offering a choice that is not possible so they can say they are not actually outlawing conventional power.
I and others who are concerned finally got our coop to write an article in the newsletter about what is going on. It just came out this month. Green isn't cheap and the chickens are coming home to roost. I expect the price of my electricity to double in the next 5 to 10 years. EPA and FJB are destroying the electric power base in the nation mostly because they can.
I don't wish to be condescending or critical but do you really not understand what is going on? If you don't lots of others have no idea at all.
Well, those three companies I mentioned just drive everyone crazy because of their hammerlock on electricity service.
“Flammability: R32 has a lower flammability compared to R22 and R410A, making it a safer option for air conditioning systems.”
“Pressure: R32 operates at a lower pressure compared to R22 and R410A, which can result in smaller and lighter components for air conditioning systems.”
“Compatibility: R32 is compatible with existing air conditioning systems that use R22 and R410A, making it a suitable alternative for retrofitting existing systems. However, it’s important to consider compatibility with the specific system and components before retrofitting to R32.”

I’m just quoting. I have no previous knowledge about the truth of those quotes.
Note that the website is in the EU. I don’t know if R32 is legal for central air use in the USA. I have and use a R32 window unit.
I believe this R32 or equiv was in the fridge in that British high-rise apartment fire that killed 70 a few years back.
The stories try to hide that.
It’s just like they said: save the planet and save money, too! More green!!!
“Oh wise and mighty soothsayer, one capable of free solar power.”
I knew as soon as I mashed the button that I should have added language to let everyone know the post was not to be taken seriously.
Look at your SEER rating of your AC. If it is below 12 therein lies your problem. Look for window units above 15 or central air units above 24. The cost savings is an outstanding return.
Remember, utilities are a legal monopoly or did you ever play MONOPOLY?
Rates have increased in my area, so I’m relearning to live without air conditioning. I grew up in South Florida without AC, so it’s a bit of a return to my roots. I’m also adjusting to taking cooler showers too (save on hot water).
Once tens of billions are spent on charging stations, rates will drop like a homosexual off a rooftop in Iran.
.09 cents here with Trinity Valley Electric Co-op.
Utilities are MAJOR political players, and pushed for the Global Warming scam/Green New Deal, to allow them to justify price increases. UNRELIABLE/seldom-when-needed “Green” generation is merely for the benefit of Major Donors and Investors, while scamming taxpayers to fork over their tax dollars to subsidize uneconomic/competition-eliminated generation.
