A molecular biologist says she was prevented from buying the Virginia Beach condo of her dreams after the white owner learned that she was black, it is alleged.
Dr. Raven Baxter, 30, was prepared to buy the home after a virtual tour of the property. It had everything she wanted: a private foyer, wainscoting, exquisite crown molding, and a marble fireplace.
Baxter offered the asking price, $749,000, which was promptly accepted by the seller. The molecular biologist, who works remotely for Mt. Sinai hospital, then sent over a down payment and the condo went into escrow.
But then she received a call late at night from her broker, who told her that the seller, Jane Walker, 84, now wanted to back out of the deal.
'He said, "I don’t know how to tell you this, but she doesn’t want to sell the home to you, and it’s because you’re black,"' Baxter recalled.
Earlier that day, the biological scientist and her long-time boyfriend, Dr. Ronald Gamble Jr., a theoretical physicist who works for NASA, made the three-hour drive to the condo from their apartment in Alexandria, Va.
For the first time, the two scientists explored the property in person.
When Baxter had previously toured the condo virtually, her camera had been off. Jane Walker, the seller, was unaware of her race.
After concluding their inspection of the property, which is near the beach and features a view of the Atlantic, they bumped into the seller.
As the couple prepared to leave, Walker appeared and her agent, Susan Pender of Berkshire Hathaway RW Towne Realty, introduced the two parties.
Moments after the scientists left, Baxter said Walker confronted her agent, telling her that she was not willing to sell her condo to a black person. Walker ordered Pender to terminate the sale.

How do they get molecular biologist out of that woke education PhD mess? She stopped doing molecular biology when finished master’s degree!
I bet that they “identify” as scientists. The seller was probably saving the neighbors from all-night rap music rattling their windows.
"OnlyFans" these days. Although she might have been in "Superfly III".
Muslims do this to Jews all the time.
Don’t see any media stories about it though unless it’s in the reverse. /spit
This never happened.
Since when is a huge mansion like that a “condo”?
I also saw this at the end of the article. So it makes the whole headline wrong.
*** The next day, Loftis reached out to Baxter, telling her that while it was ‘unfortunate that the seller’ brought ‘race into the process,’ her kids were ‘able to turn her around.’
Baxter is now expected to proceed with her purchase of the condo, which will occur later this summer.***
“Earlier that day, the biological scientist and her long-time boyfriend, Dr. Ronald Gamble Jr., a theoretical physicist who works for NASA,...”
A real life Howard and Bernadette Wolowitz.
People should be able to reserve the right to sell what they own to whomever they want. An owner refusing to sell to another can generally get 1st Amendment right protection for such refusal.
“”a private foyer, wainscoting, exquisite crown molding, and a marble fireplace.””
Just the things we all look for when interested in buying a home, right?
Not a scientist.
What is a private foyer in a private residence? Is it double secret private? Is there such a thing as a public foyer in a private residence?
The whole thing seems strained.
Who is to say she decided it wasn’t time to move? Perhaps a home she wanted to purchase fell through?
Most people could give a rats behind who buys their home so long as the check doesn’t bounce.
Total Bullshit story. But we live in a lawfare country now. The Republic and freedom are gone.
“Baxter is now expected to proceed with her purchase of the condo, which will occur later this summer.***”
At a deeply discounted price.
I guess there are still racist nuts out there, but why would an 82 year-old care one whit about the buyers’ race, especally if the buyers are educated professionals. Perhaps the Buyers either don’t have the financial ability to close, or they have added a wish list of things they want the Seller to do. Chance this story is the whole truth: 0.0001%.
Oh, wait. She does DEI.
Somebody’s lying. My money is on the agent.
I highly doubt she can even manage eighth grade math. The Best Buy Geek Squad are more scientists than this gal.
I’ve gotta agree. In this day and age...you just don’t refuse to sell because the buyer is in one of the protected classes...especially since there was an contract that was signed, sealed and delivered. Both the buyer’s agent AND the listing agent will sue the seller. Heck, the buyer’s agent will probably sue the listing agent for the commission. That doesn’t even include any lawsuits brought by the party that was discriminated against. This should’ve been explained to the seller RIGHT. UP. FRONT. If there was pushback from the seller at listing, the listing agent should’ve walked away. That’s a headache the listing agent does not want.
This is just like the stories of racial slurs spray-painted on black churches that were eventually found out to be done by black perps wanting to blame whitey.
