Yes, we mean something other than the Tesla Cybertruck.
You can’t really go wrong with a pickup truck. They’re like the Swiss Army Knives of the automotive world. Wanna haul or pull some crap? There’s a bed and you can tow. Wanna carry people? There’s a number of cab configurations to suit your needs. Want one with luxury features that rival a BMW 7 Series or Genesis G90? You can drop six figures for a truck that’ll coddle you.
This isn’t to say that they’re all good. Take the Hyundai Santa Cruz, for example. It was first shown as a concept at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, and it took nearly a decade before the Santa Cruz went into production. The original concept was a cool-looking, Millennial-targeted extended cab crossover truck with a 190-horsepower turbodiesel engine that could get 30 mpg. What we got was a Tucson with a bed.
Don’t get me wrong, the Santa Cruz is a great looking little pickup, it’s just that the execution isn’t good. The bed has less usable space than the aforementioned Tucson does with its rear seats up, and carrying a bike means either removing one of the tires of the bike or having it hang over the tailgate. Its fuel economy isn’t as great as it could be, either. With the base engine the Santa Cruz gets 21 mpg city, 27 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined; you lose one mpg in the city and combined when you spring for the 281-hp turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive.
The Santa Cruz is less a pickup and more of a lifestyle vehicle masquerading as a pickup. In my opinion, that sadly might make it the worst pickup truck on the market right now and possible one of the worst ever made.
Now we ask you, Jalopnik reader. Aside from the obvious choice of the Tesla Cybertruck, what do you think is the worst pickup ever made? If there’s slim pickings out of the current offerings, you can go for something that’s not on sale anymore. Whatever it is, let us know in the comments.
That is a car with the trunk lid deleted.
Honda Ridgeline.
Can we count the truck-cars? El Camino Real, Ford Ranchero? Worst of both worlds.
Wrong. We have one most solid car ever owned. It’s not a pickup truck.
I saw one yesterday. It's uglier in person than it is in glossy photos. I looked for rust. How these stainless steel trucks can rust is a mystery to me. But they are riusting. From the get go.
I hated it, but some loved the Subaru Brat. And what about the Chevy Luv?
There’s nothing wrong with a Tuscon with a little bed. It’s similar in size and equipment to a Ford Maverick.
Which after being a passenger in one more than a few times.... I’ll never buy.
The Nissan Titan is being discontinued
Not every one needs an F250 4X4 diesel.
My wife and I are very happy with our Nissan Frontier.
My El Camino turns 50 years old this year. I get compliments ever time I drive it.
A Ridgeline is a perfect vehicle if you don’t need a “real” truck.
One was waiting at a light the other day as we crossed. I told my wife not to even glance at it to make the owner mad.
I had one for a while. I liked it! Big engine, went very very fast!!!!
I used to read Jalopnik. Till I got turned off on the many “I hate pickups” articles like this one.
They are dumb grease monkeys that have no business being published.
Just El Camino, no Real. I always sort of liked them, though I never owned one.
Once I saw a mid-to-late-60s Cadillac flower car that I’d have loved to own.
I read that. Dealers are knocking $13,000 off sticker.
I’d buy that if I was in the market. I’d buy a Titan over a Chevy or Ram.
I loved the LUV.
Learned to drive in one.
Knew a guy who had a 4 WD version.
One of my dad’s friends drove his until a couple of years ago. It looked really beat up but the guy was a mechanical genius and kept it rolling for decades.
It was like the one I drove.
A buddy had a Chevy Luv, it was kind of bad at everything.
I noticed one up here in ND a couple weeks back. I could not believe my eyes. In a place where full size half, 3/4 and 1 ton Chevy’s, Fords and Ram’s rule, there’s one of these ugly things that are totally worthless in a cold climate.
I’m in full agreement. Those EV trucks are in deed the worst ever made.
People Please!

The worst pickup is one that doesn’t work when you need it.
Chevy, Ford, Dodge all made great pickups, then the government got involved.
I was a Chevy truck for years but my last 4 were Fords.
