Mike Sutter’s 5 Worst Burgers in San Antonio (Whataburger !? In-and Out Burger !?)
San Antonio Express News ^ | 05/29/2024 | Mike Sutter

It’s time somebody came out and said it: Whataburger sucks. God forbid somebody in San Antonio should say that. We treat Whataburger like a hometown hero, never mind that it never was. And now it’s just another asset in a Chicago firm’s portfolio. Through orange-colored glasses, we failed to see the beat-down beef, the bun crushed by overreach and ennui. We failed to hold accountable the burger that tastes like the wrapper it came in, with the little round sticker that says “no onion” or “bacon” or “you can do better.”

The change was noticeable, overnight.

Soulless, corporate fast food that barely competes with the gay clown’s outfit.

Total worst, though, goes to the new spicy chicken sandwich at Wendy’s. Best product in fast food, and frankly it just went to hsit at about the same time that Wendy’s began their new robotic places.

Once would now eat at Chipotle before either of them now, and that’s saying something.

When we lived in San Antonio in the early 1960s, they had a chain called “Pig Stand” and then a number like 39 or whatever.
As I remember, the buildings were small and offered only counter seating, but they were very popular.
Does that chain still exist?

Been a whataburger fan since 90 when moved to tx. Still my favorite chain burger but I believe they did take a step down with the buyout. I don’t eat fast food as much these days so my assessment may be off.

Sutter , GFY. I’ve been a regular customer of Whataburger since arriving in Texas July 8, 1976. Not once have they ever screwed up my order, and their customer service is great. If I’m in San Antonio, my first choice is Mi Tierra.

I used to love Whataburger in Tucson 10-15 years ago. Went to Phoenix and ordered one a couple of years back and it was nothing great.

Check out Ray’s Drive In or Oscar’s Taco house that’s where the local sixth plus generation San Antonio native Hispanics eat.

Then check out Schilo’s downtown for the other hundred plus year old ethnic group native to San Antonio.

Enjoy :)

“At the end of the day doesn’t it boil down to the individual location?”

might be true for most chains since most chaings franchise to private operators, but In-n-Out owns ALL of their restaurants as they do not franchise ...

...use more onion & mustard than most though.

I like extra mustard on mine!

Plus, using the app, and answering a simple survey on my phone, I get a free burger, with fries & a medium drink for @ $6.20. (Not to mention the freebies from the "points" on the app).

Whataburger is a good deal for me, & it reminds me of when I was poor...keeps me humble...

I do like mustard, but not on hamburgers, for some reason.

IN N OUT fries are not frozen-—

they are cut & cooked in plain view behind the cashiers.

Cannot get any fresher.

In-and-Out has great burgers. And I appreciate that they are among the few establishments that seem to hire high school and college age kids instead of cheap illegal labor.

I don't care for their fries. Yes, fresh, but too thin for my liking. More like shoestring potato fries.

I worked at Steak n Shake in high school, so I know how to make a pretty good smash burger at home. It seems like Culvers is becoming more hit and miss. They keep burning the meat.

I am well aware of that. That doesn’t make them appetizing if they are not fried enough.
