New study: Pedestrians three times as likely to be hit by an EV driver than a regular driver

Murphy’s Law, or anything that can go wrong will go wrong, certainly sounds like it’s at play with all things “green” agenda. Think you’ve seen the extent of the damage? Well think again, because things seem to always just go from bad to worse.

According to a new study out of the United Kingdom, drivers behind the wheel of electric vehicles/hybrid-electric (“E-HE”) vehicles prove to be more than twice as likely to hit a pedestrian than drivers behind the wheel of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, overall. But, when in urban settings, E-HE vehicles were “three times more dangerous” than ICE vehicles. Here’s this, from the study’s results:

During 2013–2017, casualty rates per 100 million miles were 5.16 … for E-HE vehicles and 2.40 … for ICE vehicles, indicating that collisions were twice as likely … with E-HE vehicles.

Poisson regression found no evidence that E-HE vehicles were more dangerous in rural environments … but strong evidence that E-HE vehicles were three times more dangerous than ICE vehicles in urban environments….

Of course, one can speculate that perhaps the reason E-HE vehicles were not found to be more dangerous in rural areas is probably because there are almost no E-HE vehicles in rural areas—impractical, expensive, hypocritical status symbol cars are typically a city slicker leftie purchase, not a car that rural people typically choose.

I wonder if the cause is that pedestrians don’t hear the EV.

Is the EV wearing camouflage as well?
Too many pedestrians don’t even look when they start crossing. They just go.

Headline fail: an EV being more likely to hit a pedestrian than gas chariot is not the same thing as a pedestrian being more likely to be hit by an EV than by a gas chariot.

Yes,my work is on a side street, and I often cross it. I notice whether cars are coming primarily by sound. If I don’t hear a car, sometime I won’t bother to look for one.

“pedestrians don’t hear the EV”

That’s exactly what it is......an inherent built in safety flaw that no one has ever addressed.

Serving in my church’s parking ministry is a bit more Hazzardous than it used to be for that very reason.

Is this saying that EV drivers are more into fisticuffs and regular drivers are more even tempered?

That is to also be blamed on the low common sense IQ of the kookoo kool aid inhabitants that congregate battery plug up land.
Stupidity has consequences.

This is exactly why I have my radio loud in my EV when I’m not on the highway.

Another factor in the numbers could be the propensity of EV drivers being younger.

For anyone else curious. If accurate, interesting.

Might be something else abd/or in addition at work, however.

EV drivers might just be as lizard brained as SUV drivers.

Wouldn’t that be a kick in the head for lefties if true...

I had one sneak up behind me and almost get me in a parking lot. There needs to be a minimum noise standard for EVs in motion.

We live in a good-sized neighbothood and a lot of people walk for exercise. It blows my mind to see many wearing ear buds or even a headset...walking with their backs to the traffic. Darwin is their “crossing guard”.

I think you are right. A lot of pedestrians aren’t watching, and a lot of them are so focused on their smartphones that they don’t even glance up. It is obvious to me that we should ban all cellular phones as a traffic safety matter.

I run every day- you cannot hear the EV’s which is a problem....if you want to change sides of the road, avoid a pothole, move out slightly into the road around a blind curb i always rely on my ears to hear if there is a car around....you cannot hear these EV’s which makes it even more dangerous.

I’m sure the Silence of the EVs is a factor.

Also, since the advent of EVs, I have noticed way more animals dead by the side of the road than before. EV’s kill Bambi, birds, ‘possums, squirrels, dogs, cats because they don’t hear them coming. But I do see a lot more vultures feasting on the yield of green Democrat policies.

EV’s kill.

You can’t hear them coming normally much less when looking at your phone and blaring music through ear buds.

Headline fail: an EV being more likely to hit a pedestrian than gas chariot is not the same thing as a pedestrian being more likely to be hit by an EV than by a gas chariot.

I understand your complaint, but the problem is far deeper:

Article fails to mention (and to account for the fact) that EVs still represent an only tiny fraction of all motor vehicles on the road. Hence: The vast majority of 4-wheeled vehicles involved in collisions with pedestrians are hydrocarbon-fueled, and the vast majority of pedestrians struck by 4-wheeled vehicles are struck by hydrocarbon-fueled ones.

The truth is: If a pedestrian is struck by a 4-wheeled motor vehicle, EVs will be overrepresented by a factor of four (i.e., "three times more). So, if they account for only, say, 4% of all vehicles on the road, a whopping 16% of the motor vehicles striking pedestrians will be EVs.

Thus, you are still overwhelmingly more likely to be struck by a hydrocarbon-fueled vehicle.

That is the point that the article should have made - but failed to clearly make.

Regards,
