Daily marijuana use outpaces daily drinking in the US, a new study says

Millions of people in the U.S. report using marijuana daily or nearly every day, according to an analysis of national survey data, and those people now outnumber those who say they are daily or nearly-daily drinkers of alcohol.

Alcohol is still more widely used, but 2022 was the first time this intensive level of marijuana use overtook daily and near-daily drinking, said the study’s author, Jonathan Caulkins, a cannabis policy researcher at Carnegie Mellon University.

“A good 40% of current cannabis users are using it daily or near daily, a pattern that is more associated with tobacco use than typical alcohol use,” Caulkins said.

The research, based on data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, was published Wednesday in the journal Addiction. The survey is a highly regarded source of self-reported estimates of tobacco, alcohol and drug use in the United States.

In 2022, an estimated 17.7 million people reported using marijuana daily or near-daily compared to 14.7 million daily or near-daily drinkers, according to the study. …

Doesn’t weed make one mellow instead?

I see the maryjane has really improved your social skills as well.

2 can play your game.

Do you “bate” as well as “vape” while watching the TV before going to Wal-Mart?

Just because a *lot* of people do something does not make it smart, or good.

WWF has a lot of fans, so do rappers singing about WAP.

Marijuana smokers stink. And they will die of lung cancer and COPD. Foolish people.

People smoke weed every day because it is legal, it is available, and because the quality is consistently excellent.

Almost 100% of marijuana smokers do it to get high.

Very different from alcohol drinkers. 75% of adult drinkers just want to relax for a half hour or catch a light buzz.

Today, for pot smokers, if you do not get thoroughly stoned with one or two hits, you ask for your money back!

Most of the people who smoke all day, every day, are just waiting to score on much more powerful illegal drugs.

Well, I smoked weed for many years while also smoking cigarettes. During that time I had a persistent cough and sinus congestion.

I quit tobacco cold turkey, while still smoking weed, but within weeks of quitting tobacco, my cough and sinus irritation disappeared completely.

I have no scientific evidence, but I am firmly convinced the problems caused by cigarette smoking were caused by the chemicals used in processing.

Lol, alcohol is intoxicating from the first sip. The main thing that moderates it's effects is tolerance built up from years of drinking.

The same thing happens with smoking pot. Stronger pot only means you need to smoke less to achieve the desired effect.

Notice they started in the morning. If I started drinking every morning, I imagine most people would think I have a problem.

Oddly, I knew very few MJ smokers who do so to relax. Most do it because they are addicted to “Wake and Bake”. They cannot tolerate not being high.

As with alcohol, MJ users buildup a tolerance that eventually has to be addressed or bad things can happen. I have a 70+ year old cousin who is battling it now after all most 60 years of smoking.

Different deal for Gen Z.

But for older folks, there's too many calories in a glass of beer.

So we're cutting back on drinking beer.

But Gen Z generation is just weird.

Well...with increased voncentrations of THC, I would expect less smoking. The ones that are smoking dabs and other concentrates that are superheated may end up attached to O2 tanks in their later years.

They cannot tolerate not being high.

The thing with the wake-and-bake crowd is that they are a little high...hung over, really...when they wake up. Just not high enough to “enjoy” it.

If I started drinking every morning, I imagine most people would think I have a problem.

You can't say you drink all day UNLESS you start in the morning. Now pairing up what wine/cocktail with your breakfast and lunch may present a problem at first. it's mainly trial and error. Of course by dinner, it doesn't really matter. By then you're hammered enough you don't care. You may even forget to eat! Which means it helps with obesity and is a weight loss program as well as a mood enhancer. Other than the liver thing and early death, I'm failing to see the downside here to alcohol.
