Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has once again targeted Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) after a clip of Satya Nadella surfaced on social media talking about new AI capabilities in Windows PCs.
What Happened: In an interview with Wall Street Journal which was made public on Monday, Nadella spoke about new AI capabilities of Microsoft’s Copilot+PCs with Qualcomm chips and AI Windows.
One of the features was “Recall,” which enables Windows to take constant screenshots of the user’s screen and use a generative AI model to process the data, making it searchable.
The clip from the video was shared by a user on X, formerly Twitter, and it sparked a strong reaction. Musk also replied saying, “Maybe it is time to move consumer desktops to Linux.”

Been meaning to “transition” myself but I Excel is far superior to anything that attempts to ape it.
Linux works fine for me for most things. I switched because over time Windows would slow down in spite of my best efforts. I’m not a techie. I even suspected a virus at times though the scans said negative. Linux is just as fast today as when it was installed (by my son).
Partition and them transition. Have the best of both worlds.
Well it maybe time to. At least for me. Maybe I’ll dual boot Linux.

I dual boot to separate SSDs in my workaday laptop.
Microsoft Edge is still slow to start.
It should start in under two seconds.
While the data may be encrypted in the pipeline, whats on your screen is not and if Microsoft and other Deep State minions can capture that, the encryption doesn't matter.
We need encrypted visual displays, where your monitor presents images that aren't "true" to what's actually feeding through the video card.

Millions of calls to switch to Linux have occurred, and billions of MS and Apple users never listened.
Nothing is going to change, and like Android and iOS on smartphones, MS will remain dominant on desktops.
Elon’s dislike for AI is outdated and it will become (or has become) part of everyday life. Elon is also a big user of AI in many of his projects, so, why is he complaining?

Mind sharing a bit of what hardware you have? Do you by chance happen to have a second SSD?(or hard drive)
After knowing what hardware you have, the first step is to test a live boot using a USB thumb drive. These are non-destructive of your personal data.

My understanding is that the AI is hosted in the cloud, where there is more processing power available. If the AI processes data from the user’s screen, then screenshots are uploaded to the cloud, potentially allowing government and other organizations to access them. In this scenario, privacy may be compromised.
Nah, it is easy.
Before switching, you can always do a simple test and use a USB thumb drive to do what is called a “live boot”. That will give you the opportunity to see it working on what you have without making any changes. Live booting is non-destructive.
The only difficult thing is doing your data backups - which you really should be doing anyways so it’s non-Windows/Mac/Linux specific. Anybody anywhere will tell you that, make copies of the important stuff.

I may be reading more into this than is correct but this looks like (fake) AI is being incorporated into the machines as well. At the least it looks like a segment of the processor is being dedicated to the (fake) AI.

No, MacOS is derived from FreeBSD Unix.

Not really. It’s more Freebsd but the end result is the same. And they’re both Open Source.
I’ve used FreeBSD for years and am comfortable with it, but it’s not something the average microsoft user should start with.
Looked at Linux Mint the other day, went in easy and had more than I need.
Others who have used Linux more than I will weigh in on Linux versions.
If you’re really nervous grab a refurb desktop off Amazon, throw a hard drive in it, and experiment with it. I have four refurbs and have been satisfied with all of them. They’re still running after several years.
