TRANSCRIPT BEGINS~~~~~~~~~~

Satya Nadella (CEO of Microsoft): How do we introduce memory, right?

Photographic memory into what you do on the PC

And now we have it. So it's called Recall.

It's not keyword search.

It's semantic search over all your history.

And it's not just about any document, we can recreate moments from the past essentially.

WSJ’s Joanna Stern (interviewer, provides demonstration): Here's how it works.

Windows constantly takes screen shots of what's on your screen, then uses a generative AI model right on the device along with the NPU to process all that data and make it searchable, even photos.

I got to try it out. I searched "brown leather bag."

It came up in visual search. There's no place on this page that it says "brown leather bag". It just knows because it sees (ransomnote: the image of) this brown leather bag.

WSJ’s Joanna Stern (interviewer, now speaking to Satya Nadella ): There could be this reaction from some people that this is pretty creepy. Microsoft is taking screenshots of everything I do.

Satya Nadella (CEO of Microsoft): Yeah. I mean that's why that you can only do it on the edge. So you have to put two things together. This is my computer; this is my Recall. And it's all being done locally.

TRANSCRIPT ENDS~~~~~~~~~~~

This kind of data is useless- there is just too much of it.

BUT... get on their radar and then “let’s see what you’ve been up to”

There could be this reaction from some people that this is pretty creepy. Microsoft is taking screenshots of everything I do.

Which makes conservatives look gullible. Windows is not taking screenshots of everything I do unless you choose to implement this in the future, and knowledgeable users should know it.

Microsoft’s launching Recall for Copilot Plus PCs, a new Windows 11 tool that keeps track of everything you see and do on your computer and, in return, gives you the ability to search and retrieve anything you’ve done on the device.

If this technology sounds familiar, Microsoft tried something less powerful in Windows 10 with Timeline but discontinued the feature in 2021. It’s also because there’s already a very similar app for Mac called Rewind. The software works on M-series Macs and, like Recall, logs everything you do, listens to all of your meetings, and gives you access to a chatbot to recall anything. With Recall, however, you’re getting deep, native integration into Windows, while Rewind is a third-party app you have to install and hand over system permissions.

Recall won’t work with every Windows 11 computer. You’ll have to buy one of several fresh new “Copilot Plus PCs” powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X Elite chips, which have the neural processing unit (NPU) required for Recall to work. The minimum hard drive space needed to run Recall is 256 GB, and 50 GB of space must be available.

I probably 50 50 on using Windows and Linux day to day.

In light of this cut MS out as much as possible.

This is a serious security risk if one is unable to completely disable it.

Above someone suggested using a dual boot version of Linux with your web browsing being done on Linux. That could work.

And it's all being done locally.

If this means on the computer rather than "cloud" then those computers are going to need a room-size hard drive to store screenshots like that.

I think scare mongering.

“Good to hear as there are many times that I want to dig up something from the past.”

So will the authorities when it comes time.

Of course - there will be a toggle switch/check box to disable it. Except the toggle switch/check box is just for your peace of mind and does nothing else.

That’s funny. You toggle a switch and you only THINK you’re turning off the feature.

I turned off the monitor in my new truck. I wonder if the same is true.

You toggle a switch and you only THINK you’re turning off the feature.

Same feature works like that on Android/Google OS products.

Absolutely. Online Banking, Tax Returns and the like are the first things that come to mind. I try to keep that at a minimum, but one might have to give them up completely on Windows if this can’t be circumvented.
