One of the most iconic songs of the 60's, did not know it was written by a husband and wife team

IMO one of the most under-rated bands ever. I really enjoyed their music.

He has one of the best rock voices, imo. It really cuts through the music.

Pretty much every hit by The Animals was written by someone not in the group.

I loved the Animals and now own all the box sets and all the special remasters on CD. The first few regular albums especially were really filled with high quality arrangements. Not at all like most groups looking for filler to desperately extend their record label contracts.

For this favorite song, I can’t get it out of my head that seeing his father with his hair turning gray is unfair because all of us have our hair turn gray. I guess he means letting your hair turn gray while not getting anywhere in life toward goals is a waste of life. Do others agree?

I saw him live at the time of Skypilot with special effects of a film of bagpipers and stage fog generating devices offstage. At that time guys to my left and right were probably drafted and went to Vietnam. Antiwar message was relevant to them along with the music.

“House of the Rising Sun” and “Sky Pilot” were my favorites.

“Sky Pilot” is a patriotic song from an era when patriotism wasn’t cool.

When I was in the 7th grade, we were allowed to choose one song that the principal would play over the intercom, I think our class had won some kind of contest put on by the PTA.

Our class voted for “We Gotta Get Out of this Place” - and the principal played it. Very satisfying.

Never liked Eric Burdon’s voice, especially in this song.

Fascinating story about the song writers husband Barry Mann and wife Cynthia Weil. Never heard of them. Of course, I’ve probably only heard of Jimmy Webb.

I got my introduction to the Animnals from the David Johansen Animals Medley that got a fair amount of play on MTV.

I never became a huge fan, but I liked the three songs in the medley plus House of the Rising Sun. I’m not sure I know any beyond that, but your post brings back some good memories.

“had a call out to the New York City songwriters in the Brill Building and 1650 Broadway looking for songs.”

Tin Pan Alley. A lot of great names got their start there.

The other prominent husband/wife writing team was Carole King and Gerry Goffin.
