This was written by the husband and wife songwriting team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Mann had just signed a record deal and recorded this song himself, but his version was pulled when The Animals released the song. Mann and Weil were very productive in the mid-'60s, as they made the transition from writing fluffy pop songs like "Blame It On The Bossa Nova" to songs with more of a message, which appealed to rock bands like The Animals. The Animals producer Mickie Most heard this song and had the band record it. He was looking for American material as he was trying to break the band in the States, and had a call out to the New York City songwriters in the Brill Building and 1650 Broadway looking for songs.

I feel like playing this every morning I wake up.
IMO one of the most under-rated bands ever. I really enjoyed their music.
FEAR: We gotta get out of this place if it’s the last thing that we ever do.....
He has one of the best rock voices, imo. It really cuts through the music.
#1 in Da Nang when my brother was there.
RE: I feel like playing this every morning I wake up.
One weird definition of depression I heard is it’s when you feel a sense of urgency to get out and go home but you already are home.
The official song of every US Soldier in Vietnam.
You mean it wasn't "Da Nang Me, Da Nang Me, They oughta take a rope and hang me!"
Pretty much every hit by The Animals was written by someone not in the group.
I like “Spill The Wine” with War.
Ah, the Class song of the Class of 1969, USAFA.
That’s pretty good.
I loved the Animals and now own all the box sets and all the special remasters on CD. The first few regular albums especially were really filled with high quality arrangements. Not at all like most groups looking for filler to desperately extend their record label contracts.
For this favorite song, I can’t get it out of my head that seeing his father with his hair turning gray is unfair because all of us have our hair turn gray. I guess he means letting your hair turn gray while not getting anywhere in life toward goals is a waste of life. Do others agree?
I saw him live at the time of Skypilot with special effects of a film of bagpipers and stage fog generating devices offstage. At that time guys to my left and right were probably drafted and went to Vietnam. Antiwar message was relevant to them along with the music.
I’m just a soul whose intentions are good,
Oh lord please don’t let me be misunderstood.
I prefer “House of the Rising Sun”.
“House of the Rising Sun” and “Sky Pilot” were my favorites.
“Sky Pilot” is a patriotic song from an era when patriotism wasn’t cool.
In the 60s Rock Experience dvd he seemed to have lost nothing from his voice. Maybe good to be gravelly from the start.
Worked for Rod Stewart.
When I was in the 7th grade, we were allowed to choose one song that the principal would play over the intercom, I think our class had won some kind of contest put on by the PTA.
Our class voted for “We Gotta Get Out of this Place” - and the principal played it. Very satisfying.
