DONGYANG, China (Reuters) - It's the end of a school day in the eastern Chinese city of Dongyang, and eager parents collect their children after a hectic day of primary school.
But that's just the start of busy times for dozens of egg vendors across the city, deep in coastal Zhejiang province, who ready themselves to cook up a unique springtime snack favored by local residents.
Basins and buckets of boys' urine are collected from primary school toilets. It is the key ingredient in "virgin boy eggs", a local tradition of soaking and cooking eggs in the urine of young boys, preferably below the age of 10.
There is no good explanation for why it has to be boys' urine, just that it has been so for centuries.

“Flower Drum Song” is a great book. The author was authentically Chinese, and wrote, in superb English, with a genuine Chinese “voice”.
Unlike other later “Chinese-American” authors he was no resentful whiner either.
He could make his people funny, as above.
Of course, no-one wants that book in US high schools.
China has had primary schools for a subset of the population for over 1000 years. They had to start young to pass the all-important civil service exam.
A Chinese American once told me he won’t eat anything from China.
And if one boy’s pee, who is not a virgin, is included, does it spoil the whole batch?
“This tastes non-virginy to me, Wang. What do you think?”
Soon, California will be making drinking water from everybody’s urine and feces, not just young virgin boys. China will have to race to catch up.
I think they’re called “toddler toilets” in the USA - ones where you can collect the urine.
When I started first grade, there was an actual bathroom with an actual flush toilet (not a room with a toddler toilet) in the back of the classroom.
Are boys ejaculating younger than 10 now?
During the Vietnam War the Army used to collect our urine in the field latrines, but it wasn’t for making lunch.
It’s the reason China has been the epicenter of most of the epidemics in the world.
I’m pretty limited in an American Chinese restaurant, but the food can be exquisitely beautiful.

Oh, the age thing. Calligraphy was done with a brush and an ink stone that was rubbed on a grinding palette by girls in their early teenage years. Boys were thought not to have the patience and would use too much strength so the ink would be powdery, so young girls only. Ancient art major, among other things.
Another myth. Fooled you, though.
“Virgin” means “maiden” or “girl,” so there can be no “virgin boys.” “Prepubescent” or “celibate” might be better terms.
Gee, and I thought Balut was repulsive...
“Ever hear of lutefisk?”
Wait, what?
There’s a story (likely false) that lutefisk was long ago prepared with urine rather than lye.
Agree. No Chinese food ever again.
I wish I hadn’t clicked on this thread, a pretty good Chinese restaurant here.
I guess these guys will not have any problems eating zee bugs—
