Anunnaki: Mythological Sumerian Gods or Space Aliens?
Greek Reporter ^ | May 17, 2024 | Philip Chrysopoulos

The Anunnaki gods were worshipped by the Sumerians of ancient Mesopotamia long before the Greeks praised the Olympian gods or the Egyptians prayed to Osiris.

While Zeus and the rest of the Greek gods resided at the top of Mount Olympus, and Osiris was the god of the earth and the underworld, the Anunnaki were winged deities who lived up in the heavens and came down to Earth to decide on people’s destiny.

The Sumerians had many myths involving the Anunnaki gods passing judgment on humans. The gods were described as children of the Earth and sky. This indicates they were believed to interact with humans when they came down to Earth.

Based on ancient carvings depicting deities of ancient Mesopotamia, some had wings, wore horned caps, and had bird faces, while others held something resembling a modern-day ladies’ purse.

Who were the Anunnaki? Mesopotamian Mythology with Dr. Miano. Grecian Delight supports Greece The Anunnaki descended from the god of the heavens An and the goddess of the Earth Ki. The word Anunnaki word can be translated into “princely seed” in Sumerian, but as a term, it remains poorly defined. There is hardly any evidence of an exact number of these gods and their various functions as the historical texts deviate from one another.

According to Sumerian beliefs, the Heaven and Earth were inseparable until Enlil came along. Enlil split the Heaven and Earth in two and carried the Earth away whilst his father, An, carried away the sky.

The advanced Sumerian civilization In the Sumerian language, Sumer means “land of the kings.” Sumer was located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers—hence the Greek name Mesopotamia, meaning Meso (between) potamia (rivers). Its land was in southern Mesopotamia in modern-day Iraq. Sumer is one of the oldest civilizations, estimated to have existed between 4500 BC to 1750 BC.

It consisted of a small number of city-states, each organized around a temple now called a ziggurat, dedicated to the Anunnaki gods’ worship. Ziggurats were layered pyramids with a flat top. Archaeologists consider those communities to be “servant-slave” populations dedicated to serving the temple gods. Later, the priesthood rulership was replaced by kings.

Anunnaki Anunnaki dedicated ziggurat remains in modern-day Iraq. Credit: Joelrodriquez2022 Wikimedia Commons CC BY-SA 4.0 The Sumerians pre-existed the Babylonians. In fact, Babylonian cuneiform texts describe the Sumerians as ancients. Despite their ancient origins, the Sumerians had developed a sophisticated method of keeping time, dividing the day into hours, similar to the way we count time today. They also invented cuneiform, one of the earliest known systems of writing in human history. In addition, they invented the plow. This played a great role in helping their empire grow.

The famous Epic of Gilgamesh—the so-called Mesopotamian Odyssey—begins with five short poems in the Sumerian language about Gilgamesh, king of Uruk. It is known from tablets that were written during the first half of the 2nd millennium BC. The poems have been entitled “Gilgamesh and Huwawa,” “Gilgamesh and the Bull of Heaven,” “Gilgamesh and Agga of Kish,” “Gilgamesh, Enkidu, and the Netherworld,” and “The Death of Gilgamesh.”

The sophistication of the Sumerians is demonstrated by a clay tablet translated in 2015 showing that ancient astronomers made extremely accurate mathematical calculations for the orbit of Jupiter a full 1,400 years before Europeans did.

Were the Anunnaki mythical gods or something else? It was exactly these extraordinary advances in Sumerian civilization so early in antiquity that made some researchers doubt Sumerian mythology and extrapolate the so-called ancient astronaut or ancient alien theories about the Anunnaki.

Fringe theorists believe Sumerian deities were aliens from another planet that ruled the Sumerians, sharing their advanced knowledge and intelligence with them.

Researcher and author Michael Cremo (Forbidden Archaeology), Zecharia Sitchin, Erich von Däniken (Chariots of the Gods), author and researcher Michael Tellinger, and several others argue that the Anunnaki were actually aliens posing as gods.

Some of these theories also assert these aliens genetically engineered the human race to be a slave species, influencing human affairs for millennia. These off-world gods brought advanced technologies that account for sophisticated megastructures such as the pyramids or Stonehenge. Tellinger claimed that the Anunnaki extracted massive amounts of gold using human labor and introduced the concepts of money, finance, and debt to human societies.

The Anunnaki Creation Story: The Biggest Secret in Human History - Nibiru is Coming Most mainstream researchers and historians reject the ideas put forth by Sitchin and his colleagues. They often say these theorists have either mistranslated or misinterpreted the ancient Sumerian texts. For example, Sitchin’s theories that the advanced abilities of the people of Sumer were taught by aliens, quoting the existence of “flying machines” appearing in some ancient Sumerian texts, could be a mistranslation.

Sitchin took it a few leaps further. In a 2010 interview with The New York Times, he claimed that thousands of years ago in Mesopotamia, extraterrestrials intervened genetically to create humans as labor slaves to mine gold for them. They would then take the gold back to their planet. To prove his point, he referred to ancient texts.

Some researchers do point out that ancient Sumerian texts include some unusual-sounding beliefs and descriptions, but they argue that this is mostly because they lived in a time before people had a sophisticated understanding of natural phenomena, astronomy, animals, and other areas of life.

The theory that the Anunnaki originated from “Nibiru,” a.k.a. “Planet X” has been used in alternate narratives about Sumer. However, NASA discards the Planet X theory, characterizing the existence of the planet as “hypothetical.” This so-called planet orbits about twenty times farther from the Sun on average than Neptune, and it may take between 10,000 and 20,000 Earth years for one orbit around its sun to be completed.

Why was the Anunnaki movie production canceled midway? In 2006, an unknown American director, Jon Gress, began filming the most controversial film of the century. It would be the first part of a trilogy about the Anunnaki. In particular, it would start from their arrival on Earth 450,000 years ago and move on to the pre-and post-flood empires, the exodus, and possible return to mid-2012.

It was set to be an expensive, independent production based on Zecharia Sitchin’s books. The three parts were supposed to be released in 2007, 2008, and 2009.

Yet, although there was a lot of information on the shooting and overall production, it was suddenly canceled and internet posts about the movie began disappearing. The official website of the film was shut down, as was any link to it.

Anunnaki Trailer Oficial - Jon Gress - 2017 [La Película Prohibida] Stolen clip from series Anunnaki / 1 Anunnaki / 1Anunnaki / Anunnaki movie / Anunnaki The Movie All images, videos, and information were likewise deleted from the internet. The Anunnaki movie was never released and evidence of its existence was permanently wiped away from media.

On YouTube, there are clips believed to be from the Anunnaki film production, but their authenticity is difficult to determine.

Nevertheless, the disappearance of information regarding the shooting of the Anunnaki film fueled more conspiracy theories of the “they don’t want you to know” type, making the Anunnaki a legend that will continue to fascinate and spark controversy at the same time.

Also weird along those lines is how there is an ancient flood narrative in cultures around the world.

Fascinating stuff.

Here's the some of the flood myths mentioned by ChatGPT:

Mesopotamian Flood Myth (Epic of Gilgamesh): One of the earliest known flood stories, where the gods send a flood to destroy humanity, but the hero Utnapishtim builds a boat to save his family and animals.

Biblical Flood (Noah’s Ark): In the Judeo-Christian tradition, God floods the earth to purge it of wickedness, sparing Noah, his family, and pairs of each animal species.

Hindu Flood Myth (Manu): In Hindu tradition, Manu is warned of a great flood by a fish (who is an avatar of the god Vishnu), and he builds a boat to save himself and the sacred scriptures.

Chinese Flood Myth (Yu the Great): Chinese legend tells of a great flood controlled by the hero Yu, who created channels to divert the water.

Except the whole ideology behind the flood myth was written about by the Sumerians and inherited by the Babylonians long before they were written in the Bible. Yet the writers of the Bible claimed it as uniquely their own of their own God.

The stories are the same, but which was documented first? And which was so closely mirrored many many years later? If they did not disclose where they got the ideology in the first place then they meant to hide where they sourced that ideology and call it their own.

This is plagiarism. Have either of you ever even read the prior Sumerian/Babylonian flood myth to compare them? The ideology of constructing an ark and a great flood was not uniquely Biblical and it was documented long long before...

“there were no space alien sightings in the prior centuries.”

Except this is not true... The concept has been documented through Christian and other faith’s art work for over a couple thousand years. The concept is not new at all:

Yes, and even the Native Americans, who knew nothing of the old world:

https://mythologyworldwide.com/the-legend-of-the-great-flood-in-native-american-mythology/

It all boils down to this... They are ALL correct but the ideology is not unique to each as their own, there was indeed a great flood and each has it’s own tradition to try explain why and how it happened.

But to be fair... The flood myth was more than likely shared by oral tradition from other cultures long before the Sumerians documented it in writing. So even the Sumerians probably plagiarized it too.

“Yet the writers of the Bible claimed it as uniquely their own of their own God.”

Nope. Did not happen. That is not claimed at all. You cannot find a single verse in the Old Testament to that effect. The Biblical writers claimed that the God they revealed was uniquely their own. You need to find another object of your anti-Christain venom. You people amaze me. That statement you just made. You just took ownership of it, but it is certainly not your own. You got it from other sources. That was once common knowledge.

And in the age of exploration during the 1700s and 1800s, explorers discovered isolated cultures that had a flood myth. The American Indians told Buffalo Bill of giants that once roamed the land.

Genesis 6 is hardly explained since it was such common knowledge, across cultures, at that time, except all the other cultures thought it was a great thing, when “gods” walked among men.

“So even the Sumerians probably plagiarized it too.”

You people need to let go of the “plagiarize” bromide. Knowledge of any kind that is passed down through the ages is not being plagiarized.

Homer collected a lot of stuff together, put it into a cohesive very artistic whole and handed it down and no one has accused him of plagiarizing.

Biblical writers did the same thing. They even mentioned a lot of their sources.

“Nope. Did not happen. That is not claimed at all.”

Yes they did... And you yourself are right now. The Bible is the only source that is to be righteous period, all others are false. This is absolutely a claim of uniqueness.

“You need to find another object of your anti-Christain venom.”

I am not anti-Christian at all... I am just an open minded historian with no ignorant biased mental firewalls that prevent and block out discovery of the whole picture in history.

“The Bible is the only source that is to be righteous period, all others are false.”

You can’t be an historian with such whomper-jawed nonsense.

The Bible purports to be the only source of the true God, it is a narrowly focused, very brief compilation, makes no attempt to be an exact and only source of world history and current events worldwide, and does not claim at all the be the only source of historical knowledge. It does not make any claims at all on the correctness of secular sources and knowledge. And it is nonsensical to claim it does.

The Bible writers made no attempt to address important events that were currently happening at the time, only when it involved Israel. For example, Israel existed contemperaneously with the Greek civilization and the Bible never even mentions it, although the two nations certainly would have had much communication, etc.

“This is absolutely a claim of uniqueness.”

The claim of uniqueness has only to do with the worship of the God of Israel and his directing, fighting their enemies, and the Israelites sinning away their blessings.

The Bible is the only source that is to be righteous period, all others are false.

“You can’t be an historian with such whomper-jawed nonsense.”

This is the argument and belief from 99% of believers so I assume it is the same with you? No? You do not believe the Bible is the sole unique righteous authority?

If so, then by Christian standards you are not a true believer because literally word for word this is what everyone faithful does indeed believe...

“You do not believe the Bible is the sole unique righteous authority?”

I have no clue what your definition of “sole unique righteous authority” encompasses. Your use of “righteous” gives you away. I bet anything you think you are going to sneak that in and try to trap me with something.

Being a Christian, I believe that the Bible is inspired of God, and that it is the only volume inspsired by God. That is, he has not inspired other books purporting to show the way to salvation, etc.

As such, it is a very tiny spectrum of what can be considered “righteous authority.” A history book written by Winston Churchill, for example, could very well be considered a righteous authority, since he was honest, knowledgable, did his research, and was brilliant.

Luke, in writing his account in the New Testament, said he used and compared manuscripts to arrive at accuracy. He obviously considered those manuscripts “righteous authority” and we don’t have them now.
