Open or concealed carry?
American Thinker ^ | 11 May, 2024 | Mike McDaniel

Generally, it’s best to go about one’s business as unobtrusively as possible, relying on situational awareness and solid knowledge of use of force law to avoid ever having to draw or fire one’s handgun.

Among the perennial controversies in the firearm world is whether concealed or open carry is best. Circa 2024, open carry is widely allowed:

State laws regarding open carry fall into several categories: permissive, permissive with restrictions, licensed open carry states, and those in which open carry is prohibited. Permissive states allow non-prohibited citizens to open carry without requiring a permit or license. Most states fall into this category. There are also slight variations in regulations for handguns versus long guns.

Thirty-six states are permissive and allow the open carrying of a handgun without a permit or license. Seven of these states have some restrictions on the open carrying of handguns. North Dakota, for example, allows for open carry of a firearm without a permit, provided the gun is unloaded. The state requires an individual to obtain a license to open carry a loaded weapon.

Nine states require a permit to open carry a handgun, while four states, California, Florida, Illinois, and New York, prohibit it entirely. Open carry is also not permitted in the District of Columbia.

Forty-four states allow open carry of long guns—rifles and shotguns—without a license.

The primary advantage of concealed carry is criminals can’t know who is carrying and have to assume everyone is and act accordingly. This applies largely to red states. Of course, situational awareness plays a role. Anyone appearing to be an easy, unaware target is more likely, armed or unarmed, to be attacked. Obviously, the greater the number of honest people carrying concealed, the greater the potential deterrence.

I go around it. I’m done with that city. When I land at SEATAC airport I go south to Olympia then up the peninsula to my home. It’s the long way round but I won’t go through Seattle to the ferry which makes the drive shorter.

Me too, got a rifle, tactical shotgun or pistol in every room in the house. In the head my wife asks? My answer: why not.

I conceconceal, but like to carry big pistols for capacity, caliber size, and effective barrel length. I don’t care too much about a totally invisable print. I guess my way is more veiled carry.

When you carry, that's all you do is think and watch. ;-)

Yes to what you said. The first paragraph says it all. I’m in Illinois, we have CCW, and open carry is prohibited. Open carry should be legal here too, but personally I prefer to keep it hidden. Why make myself a target?

I remember going to the apartment of a friend and he had a handgun in every room including the bathroom. Said he’d be damned if he was taking a dump & had a home invasion.

Same here, I almost always conceal carry and when I do open carry I ALWAYS have a second concealed carry.

Buddy and I had finished a log cabin on his dad’s 30 acres on the river & we had lanterns, fishing gear etc stolen. Nothing high dollar but it still pisses you off.

Guys across the road had the same issue with people breaking in to their cabin so one day they went into town only to come back & saw that their cabin had been broken in after only being gone for a couple hours.

They went looking on their property and found a squatter who got the drop on them with a .22. He ordered the two guys to get on their knees and when one of the dropped, he grabbed the .38 out of the small of his back and opened fire. He told my buddy several months later that after he emptied the revolver, he was still firing due to the adrenaline rush.

I can’t imagine its easy to shoot another person and live with the aftermath but people have a right to protect their property, themselves and their families.

You did not mention whether he hit the perp or not. They should have split up to search the property, bad mistake.

Yes, that's somewhat true. I didn't have any emotional trauma at all. No regrets at all. Just concerned about running into another type like that because where I work is full of them and the city is a woke, leftist city that does little or nothing about it. THAT is the problem. I did not use all of my rounds, only 4 of 14. Multiple hits (9mm JHPs) in both thighs of the perp. He came at me with the pistol pointing at him. I have no understanding of that mindset at all. No-billed me and charged him. Gun returned very quickly. It's over and going to keep it that way.

I’m going to say that while You are jumping on a Trampoline, swimming, bathing at best Your Firearm is relatively close by. Other than that I would surmise that You are always armed. 🔫🤠

As far as OC’ing and CC’ing are concerned it really comes down to immediate environment(rural, urban, suburban)and the cultural and legal norms of that environment.

Concealed carry? Surprise MF. ;-)

CC since 2000.”

I agree. I even conceal carry in my home. It’s just easier if I have to go someplace or if people come over .

“Got to admit. My GP-100 with a four inch barrel does not conceal very well”

I use a vertical shoulder holster and wear an overshirt . It conceals I very well and another plus is I can easily draw when sitting. When in a car, I have to release the safety belt first but I practice and can do that and draw quickly.

“Dang! Demographics of the typical robber?”

Sounds pretty unreal from a layman. So it is best to ask an LEO, as long as you are on friendly terms and are clear you will not quote them. Highlights:

1) Often high, drunk, or mentally ill or retarded.
2) About half (50%) of the guns they use are inoperable, for lots of reasons.
3) Of those with functional guns, they seldom have any experience with shooting.
4) The vast majority are from single-parent families.

etc.

Yes he hit & killed him. It was point blank range. He couldn’t say anything until he was cleared of charges & he told my friend.

It should be your choice. BUT with concealed carry, the Mutants don’t know who is packing heat. Which would make it more of a deterrance.
