Apple is saying it “missed the mark” with a controversial ad for its new iPad Pro.
Apple’s vice president of marketing communications, Tor Myhren, said in a statement to AdAge, “Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it’s incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world. Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad.”
“We missed the mark with this video, and we’re sorry,” he added.
AdAge reported that Apple no longer plans to air the ad on TV.
On Tuesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook posted on X, “Meet the new iPad Pro: the thinnest product we’ve ever created, the most advanced display we’ve ever produced, with the incredible power of the M4 chip. Just imagine all the things it’ll be used to create.”
The controversial ad depicted a hydraulic press crushing several a pile of artistic items such as a piano, an ’80s-style arcade, a guitar, and paint cans that spatter paint all over.
As it lifts up, the new iPad Pro is left behind.
However, the ad was harshly criticized on X:

Yep. Made me roll my eyes when I walked by the television and asked my wife what the issue was. (I don’t watch television)
The Left always argues that “it is art” trumps every objection, “Piss Christ” being a prime example.
As a matter of fact, art is often made specifically to be objectionable, as “Piss Christ” was. To provoke a response.
They are such children. Like the ones who do something, then look directly at you to see if their actions are successfully provoking a response.
Apple should have said “It is a commercial. It is art. It was meant to provoke.”
Instead they groveled and apologized.
Pathetic.
The “artists” who complained did so because it was their “ox that was gored”. Which is even more pathetic.
Nothing says “creativity” louder than the constant use of jargon-filled clichès.
I found it offensive - I had to listen to Cher screech through the whole thing
Digital media is incapable of replacing the tactile aspect of working with real media.
For a non-art analogy, why do hunters go through all the trouble and expense of deer hunting when they can just buy meat at the store?
I don’t see the problem
Fodder for people who search all day every day for things to be upset by
Not a fan of Apple at all. Watched the ad. What was the problem?
I did not get that was the message. It just seemed like to me they were cramming all kinds of creative stuff in a very thin computer.
Indeed. the excerpt stopped before it got to that. I can only assume that some porkers took exception to "thin" being a good thing.
Personally, I think some electronics companies have taken this 'thinness' thing too far. I have an ebook reader that I use a lot, and to be honest I'd rather have one that was thicker if it had more battery storage. The thing should be able to be used for 24 hours before it has to be recharged.
This was not the message I got. Just that they were cramming all kinds of creative things into the iPad. Nothing more. People are looking too much into the ad so they can get offended.
Secondly, for centuries musical instruments have improved as well. I guess the electric guitar destroyed the lute and should never have been invented or the synthesizer replaced the piano and should never of happened. Synthetic paint brushes should be destroyed and only horsehair should be used. We need to go back to using only animals and sea creatures as the source of paint coloring rather than synthetically created paint.
Bagpipes are awesome, too.
The only good Apple ad was the 1984 ad. Unfortunately, Apple is now Big Brother’s handmaiden.
I should probably make my analogy more in keeping with Apple’s ad. Why hunt when you can just use an iPad to order meat delivered to your door?
Pantywaste??
What was wrong with it??
Apple, besides creativity DNA, apparently also has big pussy in its DNA too to pull this ad because of crying soy boys.
Nobody is saying to create paintings with horse hair brushes. Of course things improve as time goes on, the way it should be. What I’m saying is it doesn’t matter to Apple how good or bad any creative tools have been over the centuries… The iPad Trump’s them all apparently.
Until the power goes out… 😉
>>> I had to listen to Cher screech through the whole thing<<<
Exactly, that WAS the worst part of the ad! 😱
