Ping !

(From the article):"The GM Purple Tomato was engineered by scientists at Norfolk Plant Sciences in the UK. Led by biochemist Cathie Martin and her team,
the project aimed to harness the natural properties of anthocyanins, compounds found in blueberries and blackberries, to enhance the nutritional profile of tomatoes."

"According to Norfolk Healthy Produce, the U.S. subsidiary of Norfolk Plant Sciences,
the Purple Tomatoes are a “rich source of antioxidants” due to the increased content of anthocyanins.
Unlike domesticated tomatoes which contain anthocyanins in the skin, the Purple Tomato contains anthocyanins throughout the whole tomato"

"Unlike previous GM crops primarily targeted at commercial producers, this tomato is the first GM food crop directly marketed to home gardeners in the United States,
offering an opportunity for individuals to engage with biotechnology in their own backyard.
According to Norfolk Healthy Produce, more than 13,000 Purple Tomato seed orders have already shipped."

Franken-food fear porn.

Count the number of facts followed immediately by speculation.
Example: Increasing AntiOx CAN be healthy. Too much MAY be unhealthy.

What bad things will happen if we grow it in our gardens? Get specific. Not enough just to say it’s GMO.

I like my tomatoes red, my potatoes white, and my yams orange. Some of these new hybrid vegs come in dreadful hues: brown-purplish tomatoes, for example

Interesting article. There are some tomatoes already out there-they’ve been out there for a number of years- that are a dark red, or maybe purple. They are not small like cherry tomato varieties, but they aren’t what I would call “full size”, either. We have bought them them a number of times, and eaten them with no ill effects. They are quite tasty. A little more expensive than an average tomato, I guess- they come pre-packaged in a cardboard tube wrapped in cellophane.
I can’t remember what they are, but I’ll be looking for them in the produce section.

There’s absolutely NO need for GM tomatoes. There’s plenty of blue and purple REAL ones. Red, civilized tomatoes are crossed with wild blue ones. I’ve grown several of these and they are delicious, extra healthy, and beautiful.

There are already heirloom varieties of tomatoes that have a purplish color...no need for a FrankenMato.

Thanks but I’ll stick with heritage seeds. The only purple tomato I’ll be growing is a Cherokee purple. 😏

Almost all fruits and veggies that we consume have been genetically modified since the dawn of the agrarian age. We used to call them hybrids before the handwringers got into the picture.

Could this be an attempt at contaminating the heirloom tomatoes by introducing a limiting gene in the pollen? It’s quite difficult to keep outdoor (home) gardens isolated from whatever other tomato strains are out there.

My brother accidentally developed a cherry-pear tomato cross that was magnificent, but we were unable to keep the seed line clean, and lost them. After over a dozen attempts at recovery, he has since died and I am at my wit’s end.

I love blackberries, blue berries and red tomatoes. In that order. Just those will do nicely thank you.

Most of the fruits and veggies you already buy are genetically modified and have been for decades, sometimes centuries. Lol.
