It may have been a random mutation...................
Why does this article cause one to think of the Little Shop of Horrors plant yelling “Feed Me!”? 😏
Its all gene manipulation in either case. The only question is how fast or how likely it would happen in nature vs with human intervention.
If my tomato plants grew pig ears, I would worry. If they grow purple tomatoes, not so much. I do have some that do that long before this thread came along.
“Attack of the Killer Tomatoes” cinematic masterpiece. Right up there with “Sharknado”. 😄
And Mars Attacks!....................
I love blackberries, blue berries and red tomatoes. In that order. Just those will do nicely thank you.
I like Halle Berry...............
Most of the fruits and veggies you already buy are genetically modified and have been for decades, sometimes centuries. Lol.
Calling hybrids GMO is dishonest.
That’s a point well taken.
Instead of creating Frankenveggies, just eat a variety of real food.
There’s no need to create purple tomatoes when people can eat blueberries and blackberries. And likely plums.
But natural mutations are different from inserting genes by hand into places where you have no idea what other effects it might have on the plant, or animal.
I’ve grown the Cherokee Purple Heirloom Tomato and it tastes fantastic.
We kept growing them for 4 plant generations and they kept breeding true, then suddenly they were drastically altered into a mealy grape-style, from a super sweet, juicy, yellowish pear-cherry blend about the size of a ping-pong ball, but shaped like a butternut squash.
We even kept a separate area as far from all other tomatoes as we could for these particular plants, as we knew there was something special about them.
“”””Most of the fruits and veggies you already buy are genetically modified and have been for decades, sometimes centuries. Lol.”””””
But surely not our beloved corn on the cob and watermelon and Gala apples?
“Indeed, the researchers found that cultivated watermelon was domesticated by breeding out the bitterness and increasing sweetness, fruit size and flesh color. Modern varieties have been further improved in the past few hundred years by increasing sweetness, flavor and crispy texture.”
Unless you had a separate greenhouse then contamination with other varieties was inevitable..............
And the best watermelons were the yellow ones that we used to buy off of trucks in Hollywood in the 70s. Trucks would drive up from Imperial Valley with fresh melons. The best I ever had. Until the filthy tax pigs shut it down.
Before air conditioning Houston had even downtown big watermelon lots with a giant tent for shade where the cars would pull in and eat iced watermelon and cool down for a while that was a heavenly experience for little kids.
It used to be that anyone handling watermelons, including the supermarket produce guy would pull out his slender bladed knife and core a watermelon for the customer to taste before purchase.
Don’t panic. I read the entire article so y’all didn’t have to! ;)
They’ve invented a new tomato variety that ‘supposedly’ has additional health benefits. Their ‘claims’ have not been proven, their experiments were not peer-reviewed and it’s only been grown out for consumption...by mice.
This is Marketing 101. On something like this ANY publicity is Good Publicity. You WANT people talking about this ‘New, New Thing!’
IF it ever gets to market, do or do not. There is no ‘buy.’
(Sorry, Yoda!) *SMIRK*
I grow both Heirlooms and Hybrid tomato varieties. I garden organically, so disease resistance is HUGE with me. I do NOT want to bombard my food with chemicals. I am all about PRODUCTION, Baby! I’ve got mouths to feed! I have just about grown it all. My vegetable gardens through the past two decades have been test gardens for various seed companies.
I have 18 years in ‘The Seed Biz.’ It is what it is. This is how stuff gets to market and is either a Success or a Failure.
