Former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms will no longer co-host “The NFL Today” on CBS.
James Brown, Nate Burleson and Bill Cowher will remain on the show, and will be joined this season by former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and former Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt, according to the New York Post.
Brown, Cowher, Esiason and Simms were all at the end of their current contracts this year, leading many — including the Post — to speculate that changes might be in the wind for the show’s hosting lineup.
Esiason will remain as co-host on WFAN’s morning show, however, and in fact announced on the show that he had signed a long-term contract with the station.
Sean McManus, who was the CBS Sports chairman who hired Esiason back in 2001, is leaving that position this year, according to the Post.
“The guy who hired me back in 2001 was a guy by the name of Sean McManus, who was the CBS Sports Chairman,” Esiason said. “I never in my wildest dreams it would have lasted 22 years. With all the people that I’ve worked with CBS and the ‘NFL Today’ it’s been an amazing run.”
He added that his leaving was “more their decision than maybe mine,” according to the Post.
Simms, who had been with CBS even longer than Esiason, announced the news of his departure in a post to X.
“Great 26 yrs run with CBS SPORTS,” he wrote.
“Even though that part of my career is over I look forward to what is next,” he added.
Simms told the Post that he wasn’t sure what was next, but that he planned to say around professional football in some capacity.
“I’m never going to get out of it,” he said. “I don’t know what I’ll do if I don’t go back to CBS. But I’m definitely going to continue to work with or in the NFL — somewhere, somehow, whatever it is.
“I’m just not going to go, ‘OK, I’m done. I’m retired,'” Simms added.
Several X users suggested in response to Simms’ post that he and Esiason should launch a podcast together.
They were replaced by two white guys. They aren’t too white. They’re too old.
They’re just a bit too blonde.
Good. Both NY know it alls who wanted to make the show all about them and their little spats. JJ Watt and Ryan will be a great improvement.
They are pale, stale and male. If they had taken the knee a few times, they would have been bulletproof at CBS aka Cee Bull Shit. They will be replaced by blacks, gays and lesbians.
CBS’s football coverage has been a joke for years. I can’t tell you how many incredible plays were not reshown so CBS could zoom in on the player’s faces rather than the blocking scheme and athletics. OBVIOUSLY a decision made by a director who has no understanding of the strategy of football.
Age being a disqualifier?
When did John Silver (Yankees) jump the shark in your eyes?
Pat Summerall?
Keith Jackson?
Vin Scully?
gaslight
troll
Replaced by other white guys. Really they’re just too old. Probably over 60% of the audience has never seen them play. And new athletes retire every year. Eventually you gotta scrub out.
More DEI DIE BLM representation.
Well, Irv Cross and Phyllis George are getting up there, I guess.
Coach?
I think you're right...I grew up in the era that they were playing in. It was a different game back then and different audience.
Romo should take Brown’s place and CBS should have Greg Olsen be the analyst next to Jim Nantz.
See what’s going on? Think NFL Draft. Mel Kiper made it popular more than anyone. Think Mel Gel. Talked a lot-even got the Colts GM to call him out-good for the game. This year he’s sitting on the same panel as Field Yates-handsome young(er) fella. Is Mel being pushed out as his hair gets thinner? I gotta admit I was listening to local sports talk and tuned them out. Too much woke political crap put out by the networks. They’t f-king with our heads throwing in that crap. Politics and younger faces. Notice how Pamela Harris was pushed aside by Erin Andrews? Taylor Swifts’ appearances were more than welcome.
Yea, yea, who cares....But thanks for sharing........Sheesh!
Tom Brady will bust out next.
Starting in 2024, Fox Sports is going to pay Brady $375 million over 10 years to be their Lead Color Commentator.
I have seen Brady speak in a TV setting a couple dozen times.
His communication skills are completely average.
On top of that, I have never seen him say anything that was strikingly original or insightful or humorous.
Unless Fox writes a weekly script for him, he will be sitting in a studio reading game high light narrations for the next 9.5 years!
Good. I never could tell which was Simms or Boomer anyway.
I agree.
Collinsworth s/b next.
I’m surprised Ryan is not getting more thumbs up here.
He is a graduate of Penn Charter the original Quaker school.
They could've lost this lightweight punk.
Yeah...saw that...after I hit ‘post’. Oopsy.
