A tattooed content creator sparked a debate about hiring biases after being rejected by T.J. Maxx.
Experts said tattoos could influence hiring decisions, especially in customer-facing roles.
But overall, personality and cultural fit are more important, they said.
A TikToker, Ash Putnam, was frustrated after T.J. Maxx denied her application — and she said she thought her tattoos were to blame.
Some of her designs that are visible when she's dressed are a skull with horns on her neck, solid black patches on her arms, and a pattern on her forehead. Putnam, 23, also has multiple facial piercings, including a large silver ring hanging from her septum.
"I hate that my tattoos are such a defining factor for me getting a job or not," she said in a recent TikTok. "Just because I have tattoos doesn't mean I'm not going to be a good worker."
Putnam, from California, said she went into the store to ask why she hadn't gotten the job and that the hiring manager told her she didn't have enough experience. The hiring manager also denied that her tattoos played any role in the rejection, she said. T.J. Maxx did not respond to a request for comment.
She wasn't convinced and took to TikTok to complain. Many commentators claimed her attitude may have been to blame, rather than her tattoos. Others said they thought her body art likely played a role in the rejection.
While the jury is out over whether tattoos can damage your prospects of being hired, experts told BI that the personality of a candidate was likely more important for recruiters.

It was meant to be a joke...of course people have tattoos in various places, and they are competent in their work, etc.
My Company Commander in Boot Camp at Great Lakes, TM1 Mackelprang, had “LOVE” and “HATE” tattooed on his knuckles, and a naked lady with a parasol tattooed on his calf, and he did his job well.
I suspect you don’t resemble someone who has tattoos on their forehead or face.
Nothing wrong with tattoos, it’s just where you place them. I’ve got plenty but you won’t see any with a short sleeve shirt or shorts.
Facial tattoos are idiotic as are the multiple face piercings and body mods like implants under the skin etc. it doesn’t say something like: welcome to Walmart or do you want fries with that.
A backroom software coder or cubicle monkey maybe.
Well played !
Clothing = Fashion Choices
People want those that help them make fashion choices to have good judgment. If you purposely made yourself permanently repulsive, then you have no business trying to work in anything related to fashion.
But she is not exactly “selling” clothes to women. Have you ever been to a TG Max? Do you think they have stylists on the floor giving fashion advice and picking out outfits for customers? You’d be very lucky to find anyone to help you at all.
She would be hired to man the check out. May her tats and piercings be off putting to some? Sure. But does that alone make her unable to scan the purchases, bag them and collect the money? Probably not IMO.
To be honest at the grocery store I often shop at, there’s a gal with tats, piercings, and purple hair and when I see her working the checkout I get in her line. Why?
Because she does a good job. She’s fast, accurate and efficient and friendly.
IIRC it was Neil Simon at a college graduation speech who gave this advice;
“Never tattoo anything you can’t hide during a job interview.”
True natural beauty ( a gift from God) rendered ugly by unclean spirits.
Lots of the joints- that’s what they call the little huts most of these rare freak etc exhibits inhabit- don’t actually lie about what they have but they do play with the language a bit. Lots of them are worth the money, being less than a dollar(it’s been 20 years and I don’t know what inflation has done to that). Some are really good jokes. Some are awesome like 14 foot alligators or 2 ton hogs. A few are clever fakes or not so clever fakes. The MANEATING CHICKEN is the best I have seen. Actually the sign separated MAN and CHICKEN just a tiny bit but most don’t notice that until they exit and look closely at the sign. That joint had long lines most of the afternoon and every day of the fair.
A naturally pretty girl turned herself into a freak with tats and all that metal.
A few year ago at a restaurant the server had a lip job. She was also naturally pretty. But the fat lips made her look like a monkey. I wanted to laugh out loud at her, but did not.
These women are actually doing guys a favor, for just one look at them and the word “no” immediately surfaces in their minds.
tattoos are a permanent reminder of a temporary insanity
I honestly always question the mental state of anyone who would deface their own body.
She can get a ‘job’ in the circus....right?
I have a small business. Uh, no thanks.
“It’s the women who are going to buy clothes from her that don’t like the tattoos that matter here.”
If I were shopping for clothes and this chick appeared to give me fashion advice, I’d find another sales girl in a heartbeat. I’d ASSUME right away that she lacks discernment, and would KNOW that her taste doesn’t align with mine.
A face that just screams, “Hire Me!”
“I just want to tether them to a hitching post over yonder.”
Preferably in the back 40.
I’ve gotten to be a cranky old codger. I don’t care about the freaks. They can starve if they feel it’s that important. I’d like somebody in this country to give a good damn about normal people.
Every time I see those nose rings, I’m reminded of this proverb; “Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion”
11:22
“Maybe she should learn a real job skill.”
She should seriously consider doing data entry or similar at home. Other people who are disabled have been successful at that. Nobody wants to see that.
Damn! Looks like she fell face first into a tackle box...
not so much the tatts, but the horns are a little off putting.
hehehe, and it is hard to concentrate on what she is saying while trying to read her face. the lip piercings are the icing on the cake, in not being able to understand her labored speaking voice through all that hardware.
