1. Alice in Chains
Plaintive, emotive, and occasionally mournful, Alice in Chains pioneered a melodic, intoxicating sound. Quite simply, their moodiness was mesmerizing.
Their songs not only dealt with themes of heartbreak and loss, but also tackled big picture issues like war and conformity.
As far as rock bands in the 90s go, these legends are the undisputed, often underappreciated, masters of the form.
Check out their 1994 epic Jar of Flies.

Fail.
Amen brother; go tell it. I'd add:
System of a Down (utterly unique master musicians)
The Cult (6-note singer, kick ass band)
Sisters of Mercy (goth to the Nth Level)
Linkin Park (great at their rap/rock fusion thing)
And one band with one album, but it still haunts me:
Life, Sex & Death (aka LSD) "The Silent Majority". The video for their song about a rampaging "Tank" was a stomper without a single tank in it. Theirs is a rock story worth reading...and taking a lesson from.

....oh...sorry...I thought the topic was irrelevant me-too bands of all time....
not my go-to bands/artists, but good choices
“Nirvana.”
David Grohl is fantastic. Personally, I liked the Counting Crows.
Alice In Chains was my fave. You nailed it.Those weird, haunting harmonies.
I remember the day when a co-worker asked me what “foo fighters” were. LOL!
There actually was a guy on the Eugene music scene named John Barleycorn....falling-down drunk.

There is such a thing — a good rock band in the ‘90s?
Each to his own, I! guess.
I saw the Counting Crows with Live in 2004 at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen MD. Collective Soul was also on the bill but cancelled. I don’t remember the name of the band who filled in.
But it was one of the best concerts I’ve been to. My only disappointment was they didn’t play “Raining in Baltimore”
FWIW, Adam Duritz put out some cooking videos that were quite good. One would think he’d be a vegan but evidently not. This was after he cut off his dreads and looks more like some guy’s dad’s accountant. LOL!

I detest Pearl Jam
collective soul... stone temple pilots... garbage... the offspring...
All great music... Hard to believe anyone didn’t like 90’s music. It was a great decade for music.
the song “stupid girl” by garbage needs to be heard on this thread...
Yep, one of the best songs of the decade. Watch her jump at 1:40 in this live version. Too cute!

A couple others that come to mind are Low by Cracker and Hey Man Nice Shot by Filter.
You two got it right. In fact, earlier, I was going through my 90’s playlist and listened to those 3 tracks.
Also...
Blur - “There’s No Other Way”
Collective Soul - “Gel” and “Heavy”
And so many other examples...
Rock & Roll
lost it’s soul
long time ago.
That would make a great song lyric, if I may say so myself.
