Ask anyone on the street to name a Greek dish, and nine times out of 10 they'll likely say the gyro. The Greek wrap, whose name refers to the rotational cooking method it utilizes (think the gyroscope) consists of seasoned beef and lamb seared on a vertical spit. The broiled meat is then sliced into strips and stuffed in a pita along with tomatoes, lettuce, and a tangy cucumber yogurt sauce called tzatziki. While the street food emerged in New York during the 1970s, historians say the sandwich can be traced back to Ancient Greece, where it's believed Alexander the Great's armies churned meats over an open fire (via What's Cooking America). Much like its close cousins the souvlaki or shawarma, its also cheap, filling, and easy to eat on the move. It's no coincidence the food originated in bustling metropolises like Chicago and of course, the Big Apple.

It's Saturday have some fun.
Back in the day it was Bayville NY.
They used the red sauce.
Dallas Airport had one once was great
Re: that picture
I have never seen french fries in a gyro, and I devoutly hope I never will.
“The Greek wrap”
Around here the best ones are made by Syrians, not Greeks.
Back in my day, it was a tossup for best gyros between Litton and Honeywell. Oh, wait...
Must be Brits. And they’re called “cheeps”.
Their list (for those opting not to click through; listed in order of appearance, though not numbered. Comments are mine):
Pepperjack Gyro / Glory Bound Byro Co., Tuscaloosa MISS. (Adds bacon and pepperjack cheese... looks like some alternative on sauce close to Thousand Island dressing... looks like it has possibilities).
Classic Gyro / Parthenon Gyro, Madison WI.
(big sandwich, lots of onion and tomato. Can’t go wrong here. Photo almost looks the part of a Chicago-style hotdog).
The Titan / Loops, Columbus, OH.
(Uses chopped port shoulder ... said to be akin to original Gyros. Big sandwich w/lettuce, tomato, onion, tzatziki.)
Housemade Greek Gyro / Charcoal Flame Grill - Morton Grove, ILL.
(Another port shoulder entry... has a thick bacon quality to it.)
Lamb&Beef Gyro Pita / King Souvlaki, NYCity
(This is the french fry option. Surely there’s something better in NYC?)
Gyro Sandwich / Niko Niko, Houston TX
(Highly ranked restaurant, but gyro looks average. Maybe tastes better?)
Gyro / Pap Cristo’s, Los Angeles CA
(I understand: writers of these kinds of articles want to make sure they include somebody from every region. But the look of this one doesn’t inspire me at all. Again: surely there’s a better option in this state).
My Big Fat Gyro / Yassou Greek Grill Cafe, Las Vegas NV
(Big pita, big toppings, including Feta... no pic).
Our Famous Gyro Pita / The Big Greek Cafe, Washington DC
(Food truck with maybe 5 locations?... adds feta and pepperoncini.)
Chicken Gyro / Uncle Gussy’s, NYCity
(Food truck. Grilled chicken with the usual toppings on it).
Lake St. & Lyndale Av. in Mpls. had a restaurant named “It’s Greek to Me”
Best Gyros ever!
In the good old days, when local concessionaires served their food at airshows, the El Centro airshow had a Greek roach coach had the best gyro I have ever tasted.
I love Greek diners. Gyros and Slouvake? Not at all.
I’ve been to one of the ‘Big Greek Cafe’ locations in the DC area. The actual Greek/Mediterranean food is good; their burger was really weird...
Sperry Mark 14... Best there ever was.

“the best of” anything when it comes to food is utterly subjective to the pallet of the writer.
I can vouch for the Big Greek Cafe. I'm a real fan.
I'm with you... I reject fries in a gyro whole heartedly.
Why are you posting 2 year old article?
I thought this was going to be about gyroscopes, not food.
never mind
I’ll add:’
Athena Garden
Tyrone Blvd
St Petersburg, FL
Excellent gyros.
Very generous serving of fresh sliced gyro (beef&lamb) meat, good tzatziki, fresh pita, tomato & onion.
Tried gyros all over the country. Have never found better.
