Their list (for those opting not to click through; listed in order of appearance, though not numbered. Comments are mine):
Pepperjack Gyro / Glory Bound Byro Co., Tuscaloosa MISS. (Adds bacon and pepperjack cheese... looks like some alternative on sauce close to Thousand Island dressing... looks like it has possibilities).
Classic Gyro / Parthenon Gyro, Madison WI.
(big sandwich, lots of onion and tomato. Can’t go wrong here. Photo almost looks the part of a Chicago-style hotdog).
The Titan / Loops, Columbus, OH.
(Uses chopped port shoulder ... said to be akin to original Gyros. Big sandwich w/lettuce, tomato, onion, tzatziki.)
Housemade Greek Gyro / Charcoal Flame Grill - Morton Grove, ILL.
(Another port shoulder entry... has a thick bacon quality to it.)
Lamb&Beef Gyro Pita / King Souvlaki, NYCity
(This is the french fry option. Surely there’s something better in NYC?)
Gyro Sandwich / Niko Niko, Houston TX
(Highly ranked restaurant, but gyro looks average. Maybe tastes better?)
Gyro / Pap Cristo’s, Los Angeles CA
(I understand: writers of these kinds of articles want to make sure they include somebody from every region. But the look of this one doesn’t inspire me at all. Again: surely there’s a better option in this state).
My Big Fat Gyro / Yassou Greek Grill Cafe, Las Vegas NV
(Big pita, big toppings, including Feta... no pic).
Our Famous Gyro Pita / The Big Greek Cafe, Washington DC
(Food truck with maybe 5 locations?... adds feta and pepperoncini.)
Chicken Gyro / Uncle Gussy’s, NYCity
(Food truck. Grilled chicken with the usual toppings on it).
I’ve been to one of the ‘Big Greek Cafe’ locations in the DC area. The actual Greek/Mediterranean food is good; their burger was really weird...
I’ll add:’
Athena Garden
Tyrone Blvd
St Petersburg, FL
Excellent gyros.
Very generous serving of fresh sliced gyro (beef&lamb) meat, good tzatziki, fresh pita, tomato & onion.
Tried gyros all over the country. Have never found better.
