Cicada Map Shows States Where Trillions of Bugs Will Emerge

A map of where two periodical cicada broods have been observed across the eastern U.S. shows the areas in which they are likely to emerge in the next few weeks.
Experts are predicting that the two populations, which have been hibernating underground for over a decade, will appear at the same time, carpeting an area from southern Wisconsin to the Carolinas with as many as a hundred trillion bugs.

When my son was young we had a large Cicada emergence. They are quite loud. He asked what they were, and I explained they are insects. He then asked why were they laughing at him.

I remember brood XIX In 1973. I took my little brother fishing at Weldon Spring and gave him a rod with a hook and put on a Cicada. I turned around to get my rod and there was an explosion. The biggest bass I have ever seen took it and broke his line instantly. My brother was a devoted fisherman ever since.
