I’m a Bank Teller: 3 Times You Should Never Ask For $100 Bills at the Bank
Yahoo News ^ | 04/03/2024 | Andrew Lisa

~snip~

As part of a longstanding campaign to stop printing and even recall existing $100 bills, the New Republic wrote, “Benjamins are the favorite currency of criminals and almost no one else.”

Rich tax evaders, corrupt foreign officials, money launderers, counterfeiters and other bad actors hoard them, but the law-abiding masses rarely use them except for overseas travel or special occasions.

As far back as 1976, an economist named James Henry called for an end to the $100 bill in an article in The Washington Monthly because — even nearly a half-century ago — it was the preferred currency of organized crime and tax evaders almost exclusively. In 1945, the Treasury stopped printing $500 and $1,000 bills; and, in 1969, it recalled all remaining $1,000 bills, $5,000 bills and $10,000 bills because of their overwhelming prevalence in money laundering.

That leaves just the mighty C-Note at the top of the hill.

In short, there’s no bill quite like the Benjamin, and asking a bank for one isn’t like asking for any other denomination. Here’s when to avoid doing so.

True. Between 1880 and 1960 the inflation rate was 100% in 80 years.
From 1960 to 2024 the inflation rate is over 900% in 64 years.

If you worked for $1 an hour in 1970, and had $10 representing 10 hours of work you could buy 50 gallons of gasoline.
If you misplaced that $10 in 1970, and found it today it would still represent 10 hours of your life, but you could only buy 3 gallons of gas with that ten hours of your labor.

$100 now is like $10.76 in 1967.

Bring back the $500 and $1,000 notes!

Better yet, bring back the gold standard.

Maybe they are already on the way to doing what they want electronically.

Yes, I’d like to see them return for convenience. Sad that we’re at this point.

$100 today buys what $10 bought in 1960.

The inflation decimal point has moved more than that.

A house I bought in 1980 for $86,500 is on Zillow today for 10 times that, $865,000. "Inflation". Dilution of the dollar's value, more accurately. For that price increase, annual "inflation" (dilution) is over 5% per year.

That's an intentional hidden "tax" on everyone, assessed when the Fed creates money. Each year, the Fed taps everyone's bowl of liquid cash: 3, 4, 5%, or more, is siphoned away to pay for all the extra things on Congress' wish list. What remains in the bowls appears the same as before, but it has been diluted, watered down. It's not the sweet punch it once was; it doesn't buy what it used to.

The beneficiaries of that siphoned away money are anyone who spends the money that Congress approved beyond what was collected in taxes. With criminals now in charge of the US government, 3, 4, or 5% just doesn't cut it anymore - they need to siphon off 10% or more to keep all their fellow travelers happy. They need more and more and more to fund their wars, keep all their imported voters happy, and also to collect graft from foreign aid to support the lifestyle they're accustomed to ("10% for the big guy!").

I don’t care. I’ll ask for 100 dollar bills whenever it’s convenient for me...not the bank. This is just propaganda to stop people from taking their money out of the bank after they find out what the government is planning to do with our acccounts.

The Pizza Hut in the neighboring town refuses to accept biler than a $20. Doesn’t matter if you buy $60 worth of pizza, NO $50s accepted. Don’t even THINK of trying to pass off a $100 bill!
