NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — A possible moonshine cave has been discovered under the stands at the North Wilkesboro Speedway, according to a statement released by the NWS on Tuesday.
During cleaning and inspection last week, staff noticed cracks in concrete in section N. Crews began removing seats to evaluate damage and repair needs.
“When we began renovating and restoring North Wilkesboro Speedway in 2022, we’d often hear stories of how an old moonshine still was operated here on the property under the grandstands,” said Steve Swift, senior vice president of operations and development at Speedway Motorsports. “Well, we haven’t found a still (yet), but we’ve found a small cave and an interior wall that would have been the perfect location to not only make illegal liquor but to hide from the law as well. We don’t know how people would have gotten in and out, but as we uncover more, there’s no telling what we might find.”

“Tobacco Road.”
I doubt they had a Still in there as that is copious amounts of heat and smoke, but a stash cave I can certainly believe.
Good to pass on.
Popcorn sold his shine in Asheville and Newport.
He made it in a remote area called “Snowbird”. It is deeper south along the crest.
According to his legacy there in Maggie Valley, he kept many jars on a front porch fridge. Nobody dared steal it.
The Karens took him down.
With mass on Sundays!

The filmmaker who produced this made a few other documentaries about Popcorn. Some of them are... colorful.
My daughter’s fiancée’s dad had taken up home distilling. We’re supposed to go meet them soon. I’m sure to get a sample.
Moonshine, how quaint.
Better check, I'm sure there's a noose in there. /rimshot
It was all in the swamps around Panama City in the fifties and there were still a couple in the sixties when I was a teenager. I left home in summer of ̉4 and set out to hitch hoke to Virginia. The first ride I got was a ten year old chevy with a twentyish driver. He was going to Virginia so I had a ride all the way. He drove fast and several times in Georgia we picked up a county or town cop and he just gunned it and we left them. In those days county police were not allowed to cross county lines and most did not yet have radios in their cars. At a gas stop I went into the back seat to get something out of my bag and noticed the seat was rock hard. I asked Bud about it and he grinned and told me it was his daddy’s “produce” car and there was a fifty gallon tank under the upholstery. Up front was a breathed -on V8. Bud got to use the car because his daddy was in jail for a bit. I asked him did he ever drive on a run and he didn’t say no.
