My tax return is being held so the IRS can review it. The letter says they want to verify several things including “Itemized Deductions”!
I use the standard deduction.
I’m guessing it has to do with my voter registration as a republican.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Cheers!
I have always used a tax man to do my taxes. Luckily, nothing has ever gone wrong.
Did Hunter Biden get an IRS letter /sarc?

Yep you are doomed expect a visit at 6 am soon.
The problems are many, and complex.
One major problem is the number of new untrained employees. The IRS lost their middle management and most of the older knowledgeable employees have retired.
They have been so overworked that most employees bailed as soon as possible. The case load in both audit and collections was unmanageable.
Last year, in order to get the backlog of correspondence audits cleared, the IRS sent statutory notices of deficiency to many taxpayers, forcing them to appeal to tax court. Thus the normally overloaded docket was absolutely swamped.
I do many IRS audits, collection cases, and tax court cases, even in retirement. It’s harder retiring than getting started in business.
It’s about to get far worse. I think Joe Biden made a deal to give the IRS lots of money in exchange for letting him and Hunter go free.
You closed your post with “FJB.”
That triggered the FBI snoops screening FR turned you in to the IRS.
Besides, those 80,000 new IRS agents need something to do.
The IRS is looking to put you on the No Vote List, after draining your bank accounts.

No. They took my e file right away and accepted them within 2 days. I guess its because I don’t make any money except from SS and there’s no state or federal taxes.
“Our refund gets rolled over into this year’s tax payment, so I am guessing they won’t bother to review our tax return. It is almost like some kind of extortion.”
I do that too because I am in business. Just let it ride and cover part of the following year.
It is the time honored “obstruction and delay” tactics first invented by large commercial companies to keep your money in their hands as long as possible. It first began when fair interest was paid on bank accounts, so the longer they held it the more interest they accrued from your funds in their hands. With government it is just plain putting their deficit burden directly on us by withholding our funds a long as possible.
But with business it is:
“Not my department, I will forward your concerns.” then, “Not my department, I will forward your concerns.” then again, “Not my department, I will forward your concerns.” Around and around in a circle.
“Waiting for approval to disperse your funds from my superiors.”
We need you to fill out another form we require before we can disperse payment.”
“Not our fault, it was accidental Computer error.”
“Sorry the check was made out wrong, we will send you a new one and it should be there in several weeks.”
“Our policy is we only send out disbursements 90 days after billed.”
Etc...
And now days just try and reach a human to talk to about it, some companies you can never reach a human, the human option is not even available. You are completely at the mercy of a computer that uses “one size fits all” protocols that never address your own personal unique situation.
Government is getting even worse using similar obstruction and delay tactics.
LOL. I’ve been fighting the IRS for over 15 years. You can actually turn their own bureaucracy against them. Let them gum up their own works. Now it involves some patience.
Acknowledge it can be scary.
If you can afford it, getting a good tax firm/lawyer helps. Toward the tail end (which includes now) I used Optima Tax Relief. They have been awesome.
Note: I have no connection with Optima except as one of their clients. They really have kicked ###.
I have done my own tax filing for 60 years. Never got audited. I am meticulous I’m reporting all income and only use standard deduction.
we got our refund back right away, and our kids got theirs quick also.
I wouldn’t think the IRS would waste a lot of time “reviewing” people that take a standard deduction and have just W2 and/or 1099 income unless one is AMT territory.
Time value of money.
This year, I found myself needing to pay $4800. I’m uncertain about whether to have additional amounts withheld from my paycheck moving forward. Perhaps it would be wise to notify them that I’m delaying the payment pending a review.
If your situation is similar for the current year, consider doing quarterly tax payments in addition to your regular withholding.
And keep an eye on your dog...
Happened to me last year, for no apparent reason, no contact from IRS, just a delay and then the refund was made. Only way I even found out was by going online and checking why my refund had not been forthcoming in a reasonable time.
I can remember getting a letter wanting to know if it was really me who filed the return and if so, please provide additional documentation to prove that it was.
