Officials look to crack down on James Bond-style tag flippers, other means to obstruct license plates; ‘This is about fairness’
Mechanical devices that can hide a driver’s tag at the push of a button are sold online for a couple hundred bucks. Other drivers are getting creative on the cheap, jury-rigging their plates with face masks or duct tape.
Some drivers have power-washed paint off their plates or covered them with a range of household items such as leaf-shaped magnets
“Our Motorized Stealth Plate Flippers, allows you to flip your license plates 180°, James Bond style!”
New York State Thruway cameras recorded a motorcyclist reaching around to cover his bike’s license plate and spotted a car whizzing by with a Cheetos bag taped over the Florida-issued tag.

Back when the gubmit had some self-respect, I’d have sided with it. Now? The gubmit that spends billions on illegal aliens? The gubmit that removed funds from the VA to spend on homeless and illegals? The gubmit that’s so corrupt that standards have been removed from their dictionary? The gubmit filled with folks who’ve never had and never will have a real job? Eff them and the Dorkbama-run septic tank that they oozed from.
Years ago I realized the Tappan Zee Bridge took photos of the front license plate. Since I didn’t have one, I never payed the toll. Never got a ticket and did it for a year. F Cuomo.

Isn’t part of the problem that they did away with human toll collectors, and went to automated systems that take a picture of a license plate?
Traffic cameras were done away with in CA by a judge who ruled, wisely, that cameras cannot testify in court. People are not allowed to hire experts to examine the devices (if only someone would rule on electronic vote tabulation machines).
But this story is about toll roads, not traffic.
It looks like a sizable portion of the folks posting here didn't even read the HEADLINE.
There should be no toll roads anywhere.
People are already paying for road maintenance with their gas taxes and with their license plate fees.
In Ontario, many drivers cover license plates with a blue, plastic film. I’ve never been able to figure out why. At first I thought it was to evade electronic detection, but its so common, I was sure police would have cracked-down on the practice
if its just to protect the paint or extend useful life of the plates which probably must be bought from the Govt, why is it blue?

While I applaud these ‘civil disobedience’ type measures, in the end they will lose, as all it takes is positioning some pigs downstream of the cameras and pulling over anyone who either the camera cannot read the plate, or is using a phony number for the plate, when compared to the vehicle characteristics (make, model, model year, etc.).
The way to fight this is to FIGHT THE GOVERNMENT, the people who are imposing these punishing schemes on people who simply need to drive from Point A to Point B, because the government will otherwise win - they ALWAYS do, in the end.
The NYS Thruway was supposed to be toll free after a number of years. They were allegedly going to invest all the money they collected from tolls initially and then use the interest income for road maintenance.
It’s NYS. Never happened.
We take alternate routes whenever feasible.
yep....go after the driver that doesn’t pay the stupid poll but let rapists, murderers, serial assaulters, and store smashers roam about.....there is no danger to the average citizen if somebody covers their license plate but all these other animals endanger us every single day.
