Researchers discovered a molecular mechanism by which excessive dietary protein could increase atherosclerosis risk.
The study, which combined small human trials with experiments in mice and cells in a Petri dish, showed that consuming over 22% of dietary calories from protein can lead to increased activation of immune cells that play a role in atherosclerotic plaque formation. Furthermore, the scientists showed that one amino acid—leucine—seems to have a disproportionate role in driving the pathological pathways linked to atherosclerosis, or stiff, hardened arteries.
According to a survey, nearly a quarter of the population receives over 22% of all daily calories from protein alone.
Based on initial experiments in healthy human subjects, the researchers simulated similar conditions in mice and in human macrophages.
Their work showed that consuming more than 22% of daily dietary calories through protein can negatively affect macrophages that are responsible for clearing out cellular debris, leading to the accumulation of a "graveyard" of those cells inside the vessel walls and worsening of atherosclerotic plaques overtime.
Interestingly, the analysis of circulating amino acids showed that leucine—an amino acid enriched in animal-derived foods like beef, eggs and milk—is primarily responsible for abnormal macrophage activation and atherosclerosis risk.
Razani is careful to note that many questions remain to be answered, mainly: What happens when a person consumes between 15% of daily calories from protein as recommended by the USDA and 22% of daily calories from protein, and if there is a 'sweet spot' for maximizing the benefits of protein—such as muscle gain—while avoiding kick-starting a molecular cascade of damaging events leading to cardiovascular disease.
Razani also notes that these findings suggest differences in leucine levels between diets enriched in plant and animal protein might explain the differences in their effect on cardiovascular and metabolic health.

If I’m going to die of something I eat, let it be steak.
Interesting, but I have lost all faith in the US medical community to tell me the truth. Part of woke ideology is anti-meat and this “study” seems to be support that, as if the grant money is motivation to conclude what those paying for it want it to conclude.
I don’t trust big medicine anymore. This well could be true, but I am not going to assume it is true due to the complete corruption of the US medical sector. So this information is usless to me and won’t affect my eating whatsoever.
This is what happens when you completely lose the public trust. You become worse than useless.
Good, more pork for me. I just got off a fast. I could eat.
It’s petty, it’s absolutely “grammar nazi”, and it’s positively OCD, but when the writer, the editors, and the publisher ALL miss the appalling error of: “overtime” vs “over time” I cannot express my disgust with the level of incompetence and borderline ignorance shown by those who are supposed to be informing us.
You're not petty. It's good to see someone fighting for proper language.
The other day my computer's autocorrect feature said that "alright" was correct and "all right" was a typo.
Perhaps there is a supplement that one could take that would change the action of leucine that would block the formation of atherosclerosis.
Totally bogus study! Absolute garbage! It is shocking and depressing to see such stupidity pretending to be science published.

Or...maybe they shouldn’t use genetically modified mice for studies on humans, or feed humans protein drinks loaded with sugar to examine how protein acts.
The same idiots that say this type of liberal crap are the same ones who make fake meat out of chemicals and call it good for you.
Yes. I want research using methods that will accurately describe the phenomenon being investigated.
When liberals control our language, any spelling or pronunciation is perfectly fine.
Eat more bugs.......................
BULLSHIT
Plant based proteins suck.
“Researchers discovered a molecular mechanism by which excessive dietary protein COULD increase atherosclerosis risk.”
And it COULD NOT....
At times I find it challenging to consume the RDA of protein for my weight and age on a regular basis (~1 gram/pound for a seasoned citizen). The RDA makes no mention of protein as a percentage of total calories.
I disagree with his assertion that it was cr-p protein sources. The actual protein was good, as milk and whey protein are fine, but the crud that was added to that protein, a lot of sugars and oil, were not healthy.
I agree the study did not follow people through, but if we waited until humans kept this up for 30 years, we’d know nothing now. Mouse life is much shorter and acts as a proxy.
Is it a complete enough comparison? No, but it insinuates a few things, and those could be followed up on.
It is an interesting concern and would not be terrible to experiment on oneself, with the new implied guidance it suggests. You could have a 75% protein diet, if 22% was from animal sources, and seemingly be okay.
