Expensive fridges are dying young. Owners are suing, claiming fraud

Betsy Anderson’s luck with refrigerators stinks as badly as the food she’s tried to keep cold.

“One morning I went to get milk out and it was sour,” said the Redwood City homeowner.

First, a $2,800 Kenmore Elite fridge — with an LG compressor inside — died in late 2019. “It was like 15 months old,” she said. “It basically stopped working. It wasn’t cold.”

Anderson filed for warranty service. But after two months of replacement parts failing, techs canceling service calls, and Thanksgiving approaching, she broke down and bought another fridge: a brand-new LG.

Groundhog day: $2K fridge edition

It only lived four years. “That just died, this year. Same thing. And I didn’t even bother calling them,” Anderson said.

If you’re keeping score, that’s one Redwood City home with two dead fridges in just five years.

“Yeah, two,” Anderson said. “Unfortunately, we bought another LG fridge. So, I guess that’s the definition of insanity, right?”

-snip

“It’s a nationwide issue,” said Los Angeles attorney Azar Mouzari. She represents plaintiffs who are now suing LG. She says her firm is focused on a critical part called the linear compressor inside LG and some Kenmore refrigerators. “Which is really the heart of the refrigerator," Mouzari said. "It’s what keeps the food cold.”

According to LG literature, the linear compressor uses less energy and makes less noise than other compressors. LG offers a 10-year warranty and, online, boasts “20-year durability.” But Mouzari argues in the lawsuit the linear compressor’s actual lifespan is nowhere near 10 years, let alone 20. Her suit claims they frequently break down far earlier — and LG knows it.

We have a gas dryer (Sears Kenmore model IIRC) that was bought in the 1970’s. It still works great. The repair guy recommends that we never get rid of this one. He says the new machines are junk compared to the older ones. The only thing it ever needs is the occasional belt (around the drum) that wears out.

.
I would avoid Very Expensive Refrigerators, unless you can afford to have it go up in 4-5 years and the old one is worthless.

I’m a landlord with nine refrigerators and other appliances. Never, never buy Samsung. Faulty electronics, buggy software and poor quality. The one in my house has a bad computer card that can’t be bought. Even If I could get the card no one will come out and work on it. I still use the freezer, but I have to keep a towel on the floor because no matter what I do it leaks. It weighs way too much and requires two men and a mule to move.

Yeah they don’t make em like the used to. Our fridge is only a few years old. It still stays cold, but the icemaker no longer works. The previous fridge we had lasted 20 years before the compressor went out.

Beware folks, many of these companies are selling 100% junk...They’re lying about everything...Many models they’ll tell ya parts are unobtanium and they’re selling these under various names, half the time you won’t even know who the actual manufacturer is. JUNK!

“Ok, FWIW the compressor failed after 2 years, but they replaced it for free and extended the compressor warranty (parts and labor) for a total of 10 years.”

I could go on an on about this.

Have an LG refridge compressor went out about 18 months after bought. Many calls to LG with warranty paperwork in hand. First repair guy refused to do anything except give guidance on how to use warranty. LG sent over a tech who knew what he was doing and replaced compressor in short order. So far so good.
Stove Samsug is starting to have issues on control board after just less than 3 years.
Hope dishwasher and clothes stuff very older hang there ,

I had an Amana chest freezer for 44 years and not one problem until it died. I bought a Hot Point on sale and it failed after 19 months. Everything now is cheap, cheap, cheap except the price. I think there’s a market for a high quality fridge/freezer without all the bells and whistles. You know, it just works and lasts.

Our LG compressor died and they came and installed a new one, 10 year warranty . The new one lasted about a year. They would not replace it.............

We just lost a Kitchenaid that we bought in 1996. Our ten year old Samsung has a poor design defrost drain that freezes up the icemaker in the freezer before freezing a sheet of ice under deli drawer. Trying a You Tube fix before deciding to replace or not. My serviceman says GE currently has the best reputation.

I’ve decided to never buy another refrigerator with an icemaker. That is the most likely failure point. One I have started leaking and the ice bin became a giant ice cube. I bought 4 ice cube trays at the Dollar Tree back when they were $1.00. No issues.

The other one, makes ice sometimes, then decides not to for a couple days, then starts again. No logical reason.

“says never buy an LG or Samsung”

Yep, the highly recommended repair guy I brought in to fix my 10-year-old Maytag Fridge. a couple years ago said the exact same thing. Stay away from LG and Samsung on the washing / kitchen appliances.

The less buttons and electronics on a kitchen appliance, the better.

Thanks for posting this.

I have used LG washers and dryers and they have been very good, so far. But based on the responses to this post I won’t be buying a LG refrigerator.

I have heard only bad things about Samsung appliances in general, so they were already on the banned list.

It used to be the ice makers, sensors and relays that were the problems in refrigerators with compressors lasting decades if a power surge didn’t take them out. It’s shocking that manufacturers can no longer build a decent compressor. Or maybe they don’t want to build a decent compressor.

Ditto !!!

LG/Samsung, the only stuff that they make that’s worth buying are phones and TV’s. EVERTHING ELSE IS GARBAGE !!!

A few years ago We needed a washer/dryer. I told Mama to buy a used set from the local Appliance Supply and Repair business and She said “No I want a brand new set” and went to Best Buy and spent $600 for a top loader washer with huge capacity to be able to wash the heavy bedding items from. She also got a gas dryer big enough to dry a Moose. I made Her get the extended warranty on them. The dryer was fine, no problems whatsoever. The washer was/is a POS !!! We had to get repair service within the first 6 months, they replaced: the control circuit board 2 times, all the shock absorbers that supported the drum, several sensors and it still didn’t work properly. The damned thing has a support system that can send information to the service technician via a cellular phone. The damned thing never did work properly.

For the price of that new POS We could have had a nice used one for a couple of hundred bucks.

We have a 7 ear old LG refrigerator that the compressor went out on. LG has the worst customer service of any company I have ever dealt with. We are now one month since the compressor went out and my appliance guy still doesn’t have the compressor from LG. Every step of the way LG slow rolled the process, first sending a non working link to order the compressor, then not working with my appliance guy to order the compressor and then once ordered slow rolled the order and shipping. I will, without doubt never buy another LG product again due to the non existent customer service.

In attempting to achieve the government regulated efficiency, reliability has been sacrificed.

This is exactly it. All that EcoStar crap the government forced on us. Smaller motors made of lighter components to "save the earth" are filling up landfills and draining our bank accounts.

A fridge like my parents had that lasted for 30 years? Nope can't have those! Not energy-efficient.

And not just fridges either but everything with a motor. Dishwashers, washers, dryers, you name it.

And they're coming for our rangetops and ovens next. The government is going to hobble our ability to cook our own food. But, don't worry. We'll be told that the new stovetops that can barely boil a pot of water will save the planet.
