The first phone number I can remember was “Charlotte 2 4763M”

An 8 party line, no dial. Pick up the phone and talk to the “operator”.

Rochester, NY (actually Town of Greece, NY)

The Andy Griffith Mayberry Telephone system where you pick up the phone, old timey candlestick type, and say ‘Sarah, would you please get me so-and-so, were not that long ago.

The ‘telephone company’ we had was not a ‘Bell’ system.

They had a building about the size of a 7-11 and there was one operator in it..................

Aren't you glad you use Dial? Don't you wish everybody did?

Evergreen? Ours was Evergreen 2-8489 when I was 6 years old.
Did we grow up near each other?

I was born in Brooklyn :-)

...remember when zip codes became a thing?

"The Zoning Improvement Plan (ZIP) Codes were invented by Robert Aurand Moon in the 1950’s although they didn’t come into use by the Post Office until 1963."

... "1974: The first grocery product to be scanned using a Universal Product Code (UPC) is a pack of Wrigley's chewing gum. This took place at a Marsh Supermarket in Troy, Ohio".

... Denso Wave made the QR Code public in 1994. Denso Wave and their lead developer, Masahiro Hara, invented the square 2D Code (two coding directions) to hold more information than bar codes. Quick Response (QR) scanners can read information many times faster than linear barcodes.

But did you ever dial a number by tapping out the digits on the “hang up button”?

My friend & I at 10 years old or so did that, accidentally tapping out 1 2 1 3 before dialing a regular number we thought was local. We got a talkative woman in Pasadena, 50 miles away, and talked for 10 or 20 minutes. In those days that sort of "long distance" call cost plenty, maybe an hours wages for three minutes. His parents couldn't have been too pleased when they saw the phone bill for that!
