Why Are Americans Unhappy About the ‘Thriving’ Economy? — 5 Reasons Behind the Economic Gloom

ith the economy apparently on the up and up post-pandemic, some Americans find themselves unhappy with the current state of affairs.

The Financial Times reported that only 14% of American voters believe they are better off financially now than when Joe Biden took office, according to a recent poll. At the same time, nearly 70% of voters thought Biden’s economic policies had either hurt the U.S. economy or had no impact. Just 26% of respondents said his policies had helped.

Despite these views, the unemployment rate was recently as low as 3.9%, wage inequality has decreased over the past three years, more jobs are being added to the economy at a record pace, and wages adjusted for inflation have finally surpassed pre-pandemic levels. So, the question remains: Why do some many Americans feel gloomy about a positive economy?

Housing costs are extremely high:

Inflation is still rampant:

People need to adjust from rapid economic change:

There are high expectations:

The media hypes up bad news:

Amazing: Inflation is still rampant

Amazing, we're supposed to ignore inflation as a economic indicator.

I don’t know about others but for me it’s my new found poverty.

It’s taking all the fun out of our thriving economy.

We are supposed to put a small tree branch between our teeth and bite down until the tears come as we contemplate inflation destroying our retirement, money thrown away in the trillions and added to our debt and funding for millions of illegals and crime prevention costs about them.😭

Then say “I feel good, like I knew that I would. With Biden.”🤪

Your post was the perfect blend of “sad truth” and “sublime wit.”

It ranks a 10.0 on the sardonic scale. Just brilliant.

On a serious note, I’m sorry things are not going well. Praying things turn around for you.

Well heck I have to say fast food is a leading indicator. Used to be a couple of cheap hamburgers were 2 for 4 dollars now 4 dollars each. Coffee drink at starbucks was 3.85 now over 5 dollars. It didn’t happen slowly it was very sudden. The sudden jumps are fairly frequent and not just a matter of a few percent but more of huge jumps as much as double. These things don’t sneak up they jump out. Packages contain less portion sizes are smaller. I bought a box of apple pies. The box made them look rectangular but when I opened it they were square. The box had over twice as much space inside as it needed for the little tiny pies. It’s hard to have a positive outlook.

The economic problems all boil down to just one thing: huge and uncontrolled inflation.

Oh, and by the way, the government is lying about inflation. Real inflation is running over 10% right now, not the 4% claimed.

Every person who buys anything senses this inflation, even if they can not put it into words.

I recently watched the diner scene from Pulp Fiction where they made a big deal about the luxury $5 milkshake. I just checked the Steak n Shake menu and $4.99 is the price of their not so luxury, fast food milkshake.

They talk about jobs added and lower unemployment. What they don't talk about is that lower wage jobs have been added and that lots and lots of people have given up and stopped looking for full time jobs. Just about anything you read about has young people trying to figure out “side hustles” because they “need” more money. So if you include side hustles, there are a lot more jobs, but not more people employed.

Another thing not discussed is how uncertain, people feel about their future. I have seen during Covid huge numbers of jobs, businesses, and lives destroyed. I know people who had good careers, forced to retire early or fired because they objected to being vaccinated.

Most people no longer have pensions to provide for them in old age, they have 401k’s. The stock market is extremely volatile and most fear for their retirement savings. Every year the Social Security Trust sends out a letter saying that full funding at current rates can't be guaranteed past a certain year.

There are real reasons why people are concerned. There are real reasons why people want to “Make America Great Again.”

Thank you! Not many people know or use the word sardonic.
I tend to forget about it myself. :)

I am not really in poverty, that was an exaggeration, say poetic license, but I am far from being in a confident financial position. That’s my doing, I made my choices in life. But it is definitely further from a position of comfort now than it was a year and a half ago.

Thank you for your thoughts about that.

Comfortable or not I suspect most of us are seeing a financial reduction and we all know why and we know it didn’t have to happen.

Nobody is upset with a thriving economy.

We’re upset with inflation, high interest rates and the democrats gaslighting us into thinking that adverse economic conditions are a good sign.

Ironically, my husband and I are earning more now than ever but inflation is just killing us. Groceries, gas, utilities, etc. are way up.

Our habits haven’t changed, the economy has.

I think the biggest shock I had recently was the p[rice of laundry detergent.

It’s gone though the roof and now they are offering quart sizes to be able to advertise them for $2.50 per bottle, when it used to be almost double the quantity.

They can spin this all they want to, the problem here is that groceries, utilities ect. are NOT included when it comes to inflation numbers!! WE ALL believe what the hell we SEE with our own eyes and pocketbooks, they can say whatever they want people are NOT as stupid as they think we are!! The more the media and Biden try to tell us we are wrong the economy is GREAT the more pissed off people become!!!

If you live in a condominium, brace yourself. The rates for a master insurance policy are 40% to 50% higher than last year.

Communities that were paying $90K last year are looking at $140K or more this year.

It’s painful.

It has been dramatic, and wages haven't even been close to keeping up. If it were just me at home, I would cut expenses/spending to the bone and hoard money for investments etc.
