How the sun could wipe us out
Unherd ^ | 07/19/2021 | Bret Weinstein

The world began to end on 12th May 2024, though another 309 years would pass before our species finally went extinct. The apocalypse was not the result of one thing, unless that one thing was that we repeatedly ignored signs that industrial civilisation had become increasingly fragile, even as it grew ever more powerful. But our end very definitely had a trigger. A burst of charged plasma from the sun caused the sudden, simultaneous collapse of numerous electrical grids across the world, setting in motion a cascade of devastating failures from which humanity would never recover.

Groan, not this C again!?

“Charged particles” from the sun, aka a CME are no more dangerous than a cathode ray tube display. There have been many CMEs since the “Carrington event” and they don’t collapse the electric grid. Electrical grids have built in solid state surge protectors for decades. You’d have to scour the world to find electrical grids that are crappy enough to fry out during a CME.

Charged particles DO-NOT-EQUAL a Fricking Gamma Ray Burst!

However, since both are on the electromagnetic spectrum and both are “radiation” from a sun I guess it’s cause for blog pimping sensationalism for the “we’re all gonna die” crowd.

The gamma ray burst just requires a supernova -which our sun won’t be producing for a few billion years.

What’s next, sunlight? It’s also on the electromagnetic spectrum and is emitted by the sun.

That's what the Magic 8 Ball said, anyway.

I did not know Bret Weinstein, an evolutionary biologist, wrote dystopian fiction.

I have mixed feelings about what an EMP or CME would do but if it fried solid telegraph wire, surely it would fry unshielded Cat5 cable and guess what the modern world runs on?

We've all been to a store when the "system" was down. If you're lucky and have cash, you might be able to buy something, but not fuel. Imagine the system being down for months. Half the population relies on cashless EBT to eat well.

Doesn't have to be an EMP/CME. The dems will cause a collapse eventually as that is their goal.

Good luck with this.

I'm quite sure the cattlemen around here will supply people with beef to prevent neighbors from turning violent on each other or on them. They won't be able to manage their herd with no fuel anyway. Can't put up hay for Winter with no tractor. Everyone knows how to process a four legged critter. Everyone will be relying on deer prior to that. My meat goats are probably 300 lbs of meat.

This area is loaded with springs that pump out a gazillion gallons of potable water. I have one of the bigger ones 1/4 mile away. Certified by the state for a bottled spring water business that they never followed through with.

Some people around here had no electricity as recent as 100 years ago. This was Little House on the Prairie land 200 years ago.

Field corn and wheat will become big staple items and grain mills will have to be built but it's been done before. This is down the road and could be put back to use.

The Amish wagons will replace delivery trucks and more wagons would be built. Cows might not be as fast as a horse but can pull. All the horse/oxen pulled implements decorating people's yards or sitting in fields will be put back to use. There's a reason country people hang on to that stuff.

Most non-white collar working men around here work at the factories, of which there are surprisingly many, mostly making plastic products. I work maintenance at one of these places. They are all able bodied and most have general hands on skills that will be put to good use and they can definitely handle the heat. Gets kinda warm in summer in a factory that's constantly melting plastic resin to turn it into products.

Ain't nothin' but a thing.

Instant hard life but survivable well away from the cities.

That big spring is down a big hill from me. When we lived off grid, we did our share of hauling water up a hill. Kids each carried a gallon and the wife and I two gallons each. Laundry day was a few trips. We were younger then and I wouldn't be able to do it now but I'll figure something out.

Good rant, though not really a RANT, just practical observations.

“Instant hard life but survivable well away from the cities.”

I agree. I am so GRATEFUL to be where I eventually landed. Been doing more and more hands-on since 2008 and it has paid off in many ways.

I’m not saying I WANT for destruction of America, and if I still had a VOTE that wasn’t CANCELLED via FRAUD, that would be nice, but we’d be OK for a while, too.

Our aging population, coupled with young heads full of mush (Miss You, Rush!) who never look up from their phones and can’t actually DO anything constructive are going to be problematic, IMHO. :(

It will be an adjustment and some won’t be able to take it but survival is a helluva motivator.

My feeling is that it will be a gradual shtf, a continuation really. People will start using the old methods when they can no longer afford the modern versions or new versions mandated by fedgov.

Look, these people who always put “could” into their messages, headlines or warnings simply never go far enough. They never talk about how the entire Universe “could” explode at any time and wipe out every single star, planet and asteroid out there and all life here.

OK, /sarcasm off.

In other news, the Obamas, owners of two beachfront properties, aren’t in the least bit worried that the oceans “could” rise several feet.

How the sun could wipe us out?
Nonsense. Sending more taxes to the gov’t to combat global climate change will protect us against the sun.

Exactly. Looking forward to my Chicken Coop (in the barn) being ready to receive come April or May. I’ve missed having chickens.

I’m sure we’ll be adding meat chickens to the mix in the near future, too.

Beau would LOVE to make one of those feather plucking barrels; he’s always looking for the next project. ;)

My survivalist chicken finally disappeared. I’ll have to get some more fertilized eggs from the neighbor and incubate them or get some day old chicks from the hatchery.

Me and a neighbor went in on two dozen meat birds once and I built a chicken plucker. It ended up being PTO driven. I took the gearbox of my PTO mower and ran it backwards to slow it down as opposed to sped up. Had to idle the tractor at 800 rpm but it worked great. By then, the birds were at the neighbor’s because he had a 16x16 chain link dog pen which worked well to keep them in. So I drove my chicken plucker up the road. LOL

I still have the barrel part, disc and plucker fingers. Just need a frame to put it in, couple of pulleys and an electric motor.

We went with the red ranger, red broiler types instead of the cornish cross so we had to feed them longer. Then hunting season got in the way which added two weeks. We had big birds that cost $5-6 each. Next time, I would get the cornish cross and go exactly the 42 days or maybe even take the roosters 2-3 days earlier. That means two processing sessions but depending on how many you have, that might be a good thing.

Thanks for the ideas. Yeah, he uses the take-off on the skid steer for so many things!

A few weeks back we were using it to run the cement mixer while we were re-building dog kennel walls in their shed (which is attached to the barn).

He amazes me with all of the things he knows how to do! :) (You do, too!)
