When 2024 Democratic presidential hopeful Rep. Dean Phillips took over his family's booze business in 2000 he oversaw a raunchy ad campaign used to sell Revelstoke, a spiced Canadian whisky.
The ad campaign used strippers to sell the whisky and suggested men needed to drink more of it to deal with overweight, undesirable women.
It also used creative technology so that the name of the whisky brand would show up in urinals as male customers went to the bathroom.
Phillips has used his business background as a benefit since launching a political career in the aftermath of former President Donald Trump's 2016 win.
The Minnesota Democrat was dubbed the 'charming liquor heir' as he flipped a Republican seat blue in 2018 for the first time in 60 years.
Phillips' mother had remarried the heir to Phillips Distilling Company after his father died in Vietnam when the congressman was just six months old.
In his early 30s, Phillips took over the company as president and CEO after he earned his MBA at the University of Minnesota's business school.
In profiles of Phillips - who launched a primary bid against President Joe Biden in late October - that part of his career is often mentioned because the congressman is credited for bringing Belvedere vodka from Poland to the United States.
What's gotten less attention is some of the marketing tactics the company deployed.
A February 2001 Strategy article about the ad campaign noted that, by design, it wasn't 'politically correct' and was a 'throwback to campaigns of old when fun was fun, and advertisers were a little more libertarian in their willingness to offend.'

Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota, is mounting a long-shot primary challenge against the president, recently said for the first time that he would consider accepting No Labels’ nomination if the election becomes a rematch between Biden and former President Donald Trump and it looked like Biden was “almost certain to lose.”
That’s a reversal for Phillips, who had said that if he loses in the Democratic primary, he would support Biden.
No Labels is a group that is fielding a possible bipartisan “unity” third-party ticket.
While Fulks said Sunday that third-party groups do not pose a major risk of spoiling Biden’s campaign, Biden himself said last fall that the group would “help the other guy,” in reference to Trump.
No Labels officials have insisted they don’t want to run a ticket merely to hurt Biden over Trump.
