The early 1970s were the real heyday of beef in the US. It was the era of stroganoff, stews, and casseroles, steak lunches and 60-cent hamburgers. It was also the beginning of a long decline for the all-American meat.
In 1975, Americans on average ate close to 90 pounds of beef each year. That has now dipped to around 57 pounds, and chicken has assumed beef’s place as the most-consumed meat in the US.

Young people not consuming it.
There is nothing better than a good steak. It's so easy to cook as well so I'm surprised to hear this about the younger generation.
I love it!
Well, first of all there’s the price. I just saw five lbs of ribeye for $65.
Except for hamburgers and hot dogs (and the VERY occasional holiday tenderloin) I’m not a fan of beef. Lots of people just like other meats.
Yes a bit of a luxury.
Not a bad price.
Beef is now expensive.
“Falling appetite for beef is good news for the environment. Beef produces 10 times the greenhouse gas emissions of poultry or pig meat and between 20 and 60 times more than many plant-based forms of protein.”
In the second paragraph they expose their REAL agenda; reading the rest of the silly, dodgy article confirms it.
I like how quickly you can cook it. I’m younger than most here and value that so I’m surprised at this/.
There is the cost which lurk mentioned...
my neighbors parents had a ranch, we would always buy at least 1/2 a cow from them every year.
I ate next door a lot too cause they liked to do lots of barbecues.
even expensive steak houses do not compare
Oh, and looky here! A bio of the author:
“Matt Reynolds is a senior writer at WIRED, where he covers climate, food, and biodiversity. Before that, he was a technology journalist at New Scientist magazine. His first book, The Future of Food: How to Feed the Planet Without Destroying It, was published in 2021.”
Nope, no agenda with this one! Just pure journalism!
Beef is not a cheap meat anymore. That’s basically it.
What are cattle prices like now..... I think it might surprise a few
I didn’t like it that much when it was cheaper - though I did like home-cured corned beef.
I liked pork, too; but when they decided to make it all lower in fat, it didn’t have much taste anymore.
I still like ham...but even that doesn’t seem as good as it used to be.
They are going to attempt to make it a luxury item because they say it requires the most resources to produce and thus hurts the environment the most. Enjoy the crickets, peasants...
Freegards
Yes I understand that. It’s a once-in-a-while kind of thing
Price point. Steak is a real treat in most houses today. At $4-6 per pound for grand beef … tacos are getting a bit pricey. Processors are the ones gouging us. It’s not the producers.
A medium rare steak cooked on a charcoal grille is wonderful .

The local Food Lion has a “financing available” sign above the meat counter.
For Christmas Eve, we’re having a slow-cooked pot roast along with our ham. We used to have just turkey at Thanksgiving and ham at Christmas, but we’re added pot roast the past five years. It’s actually the favorite main course now at the holidays and occasionally during the year.
