For Christmas Eve, we’re having a slow-cooked pot roast along with our ham. We used to have just turkey at Thanksgiving and ham at Christmas, but we’re added pot roast the past five years. It’s actually the favorite main course now at the holidays and occasionally during the year.
Us too! It’s one of the easiest main courses to get to turn out perfect and nearly impossible to screw up. Brown a large chuck roast in butter, then throw immerse in beef broth in the crockpot for 4 hours on high, 6 on low. Perfect every time. Use some of crockpot broth for gravy. Mmmm..
Turkeys seem to be fickle. Not sure yet what the perfect method is but my Oster roaster does a good job. Problem is the “15-20 mins per lb” never seems to correlate to the actual cook time even when fully thawed.
The last time I tried cooking just a turkey breast in the oven I used a pyrex or glass dish (dumb mistake). It shattered in my hand as I was pulling it out. Turkey on the floor. Fortunately I had cooked it in our kitchen and was carrying it to the in-laws right behind us and no one saw the incident. It all got eaten.
