A police investigation is underway after the family of a Lakota man said staff members at a Colorado hospital cut the 65-year-old’s hair without permission.
Members of UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital “lied” about having a video that allegedly showed the medical center was not at fault for cutting Arthur Janis' hair, a regent of the University of Colorado said.
Arthur Janis is a member of the Oglala Lakota Nation, for whom hair is sacred from the moment of birth. It is significant in many sacred rites — such as the Keeping of the Soul, Arthur Janis’s brother, Keith, said.
“Each of the strands is the power of you and represents your power as a Lakota individual,” he said. “It’s also a memorial to our loved ones that we’re leaving behind. … In any part of the hemisphere here, indigenous people’s hair is sacred to them.”
Keith Janis contends that workers at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital neglected “basic hygiene” for his brother, whom he says suffered a stroke at the facility, leaving him unable to comb or wash his own hair.
Hospital spokesperson Dan Weaver said members of Arthur Janis’ care team had to trim his hair to address a medical concern, and said the hospital conducted its own “extensive” investigation into the allegations.

Agree. And if they are so hell-bent on following tribe customs, maybe they should have just packed him off to some TeePee somewhere and have a tribal medicine man shake some bones, burn some sage and blow spit on him as the treatment.

And no I don't have long hair now, but for full disclosure, I have had hair down to my shoulders a few times in my life, once through the Scamdemic because Great Clips required a mask.
How often do they cut a woman’s hair that short?
If there was a real medical necessity there should be a 50-50 split between the sexes.

You have a point about woman’s hair. Unfortunately, too many males fail to take care of their long hair. There are numerous youtube videos of disgusting male dirty hair which colors my thinking.
That said, I believe male and female hospital care are different. So if the male requires female type care the family needs to negotiate that specific care. Otherwise the hospital will focus on treating the stoke rather than hair care.
I have not cut my hair since 1993—since I became a free man that only worked for myself—i understand the power of hair and I would sue them for everything

Part of my point, the hospital doesn’t have the resources to take care of these issues. However, if the family brings it up and accepts full responsibility for the patient cleaning, it should be allowable.
That said, if at anytime the family fails in their duties (I don’t believe most families have the morals to keep their commitments) then the hospital is allowed to standardize.

Wash/comb/braid. The washing/combing won’t need to be done as often as just letting the hair stay loose. The poor man can’t even comb his own hair, maybe because there was too much of it.

regarding the boarding school
With some minorities, no good deed goes unpunished. If you teach them to read and write, they have no reason to remain unemployed, sucking off the welfare tit, spending their time growing their hair, or maybe growing their fingernails.
The family should be thankful this man is being cared for. But, no, they see this as a George FLoyd moment. A $27 million payout.
