No! No! No! That was Wild Cherry.
The Big Dish:

I meant the song “learn to love,” last track on the album. Great tune and great vocal.
I was going to call the oops on that one.
I know that this is divided by decades but personally I think the best 10 years of music is 1965-1974 or 1964-1973 or 1966-1975. I'd have to review each month on the end years to make the final call. Those intervals drop the pre-British invasion stuff but end before disco really got going. Swapping in the pre-disco stuff of the early 1970s for the pre-British Invasion of the early 1960s is a net positive in my mind.
Video Killed The Radio Star” by The Buggles...
Was the first video played on MTV. I guess it really didn’t pan out cuz MTV is now Soap Opera Channel...
Why on Earth is Black Betty by Ram Jam not on this list? It was one of the best songs of the 70s and STILL rocks people!
The musicality of Gilbert O’Sullivan’s hit was impressive, he’s right up there with some of Randy Bachman’s Guess Who work which was head and shoulders above most three chord Charlie rock crap.
Thanks for that !
Well.....I waited to make this post. As soon as I read the title, one certain song came to mind. I waited to see if anyone else might think of this, I think, iconic one-hit wonder.
In The Year 2525.
I have the 45rpm of 2525, and it was played, oh, I don’t know, a 100,000 times?
On the first work day of the year 2020, I brought a good bluetooth speaker to work and started playing 2525 early in the morning. The office had a fair amount of liberals, and they didn’t get it. The conservatives in the office had great smiles on their faces.
To those of us who first viewed 2001 A Space Odyssey, the actual year 2001 seemed far, far away. To actually say the year 2020 when it came sometimes made me feel like a time traveler.
I had hoped to at least see SpaceX Starship reach Mars. At first, and without people, maybe Starship will just orbit Mars and come back. Some Starships will just be supply ships without people.
I had hoped to witness some of this, but the Hussein/Biden Regime is hindering SpaceX every which way they can. After the very recent 2nd test launch of Starship/Superheavy, SpaceX will be ready for the next test launch before the end of 2023. The Hussein/Biden Regime is treating each test launch as if it is an airplane/airline crash. They have even delayed launches by having the Federal Fish & Wildlife Administration review and approve.
SpaceX has established reusability as the standard for commercial space. Heck, the European Space Agency (ESA) has just contracted at least 4 launches with SpaceX. The ESA Ariane-5 rocket is retired, and the Ariane-6 is 4 years behind schedule. Even when Ariane-6 is ready, they are not reusable. There is a competitor to SpaceX’s Starlink service called OneWeb. SpaceX agreed to launch some of OneWeb satellites when others couldn’t. Some of SpaceX’s first stages have launched 18 times, driving down the cost from billions to much, much less.
To each his or her own. That was a long time ago. I’m a different person now, but I remember what it was like to be 16 years old in 1976.
That was a neat song.
Fortunately, all is not lost. Our three 30-something children all saw this in live action when they were children, and all understand the struggle in their adult lives. They all have working turntables. 4 of the 5 of us are very much audiophiles, with vinyl as the preferred method of deliverance.
I am having a real Senior week...:)
Funny. I love music, I have played the drums, the sax, and trombone, even a baritone bugle, so my music range is wide.
I can speak conversantly about jazz, classical, rock, etc. but...my love of Seventies music largely stems from me listening to it on the radio rather than playing it live or listening to it on LPs, and I realized that for the most part, my Seventies repertoire of music is largely composed of what I heard on the radio all those years.
IOW with respect to pop music, I am like a liberal regarding substantive issues, a mile wide and in some places, very shallow!
I was looking on YouTube for that AWB song “Pick Up The Pieces”, and saw another one by them (”Play That Funky Music White Boy”) which I suppose must have been a cover. Dang, when I listened to it, it sure sounded like the one I remembered, but...so did the Wild Cherry one...:)
And you sound like you know your music, so..I’m going with your knowledge base!
It's so much better, is it not? You hear the random squeaks of fingers on the guitar strings, little background noises from the band members' feet tapping or little sound system blips, and if their is an audience, their sighs and rustles.
Ram Jam - Black Betty
We love vinyl. Everything about it is superior, as you mentioned. Every squeak, every sound, every sigh, every possible breath.
One of the greatest gifts our youngest son gave us, was his day after Christmas recording in the studio, where we got to watch him and his band mates record a few songs for one of their albums, their only one released on vinyl. It was a lifelong wish for my husband, and I was the happy tag-along. Truly fun to watch as it was recorded and getting to listen to the end product. Very cool. Way cool. It was still very cleaned up compared to the old days, and yet, very awesome!
Betting it was the Wild Cherry version you really heard way back when. I know that’s the one I’m familiar with. ;)
Heh, could very well be...
